Germany: Prussian Queens

This is the 1250th post on my blog! Thank You all of you for sending me all this nice postcards and covers with so many nice stamps!

On Tuesday I visited the German Historical Museum in Berlin and there I bought a postcard showing the Prussian Queens.

When Brandenburg-Prussia became a kingdom in 1701, Sophia Charlotte of Hanover became the first Queen in Prussia. She married Frederick I in 1684 and is the mother of the later king Frederick William I of Prussia. She was highly educated and is mainly remembered for her friendship and correspondence with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. She also inspired the foundation of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Her summer residence in Berlin was later called Charlottenburg Castle in remembrance of her. She died in 1705. The second Queen in Prussia became Sophia Louise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, nevertheless she is not mentioned on the card. Sophia Dorothea of Hanover was Queen in Prussia between 1713 and 1740 and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Bevern between 1740 and 1772, the latter was also Queen of Prussia between 1772 and 1786. Frederika Louisa of Hesse-Darmstadt was Queen of Prussia between 1786 and 1797. Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was the wife of King Frederick William III and the mother of the later king Frederick William IV of Prussia and later German Emperor Wilhelm I. She was well loved by her subjects and cultically admired. She died in 1810. Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria was Queen of Prussia from 1840 to 1861. Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was Queen of Prussia between 1861 and 1888 and from 1871 to 1888 also German Empress. Victoria of the United Kingdom was Queen of Prussia and German Empress between March and June 1888, Augusta Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein from 1888 to her husband's abdication in 1918.
