Poland: Royal Salt Mine of Wieliczka

This week I got fourteen postcards including one from Poland.

It shows the Salt Lake at Weimar Chamber of the Royal Salt Mine of Wieliczka. The Royal Salt Mine of Wieliczka is one of the oldest salt mines in Europe. The mining started in the 13th century and had royal status. It illustrates the historic stages of the development of mining techniques in Europe from the 13th until the 20th century. Between the 14th and the 18th century the Royal Salt Mine of Wieliczka formed together with the Royal Salt Mine of Bochnia the largest mining company in Poland. In 1918 the mine became a state property of the Republic of Poland, which monopolised the salt trade. Since 1978 is the Royal Salt Mine of Wieliczka on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in 2013 the Royal Salt Mine of Bochnia was added.
