Germany: Clara Schumann

Clara Schumann, née Clara Wieck, was a German pianist, composer and piano teacher. She was born in Leipzig in 1819 and was soon considered to be a child genius. Her international concert career in Europa, which lasted for 61 years, began when she was eleven years old. The pieces she used to play during her concerts played an important role in the definition of the musical repertory for concerts in the 19th and 20th century. Apart from that she also composed own works. In 1840 she married Robert Schumann.

To commemorate her 200th birthday the German Post issued a stamp in early September. Luckily I still had some matching postcards from my trip to Leipzig last year, which I used to get special postmarks. The cards returned on 21st September.

The first card shows a portrait of Clara Schumann.

With a matching stamp:

The second card shows the Schumann House in Leipzig. The Schumann House was built in 1838. During their first four years of marriage between 1840 and 1844 Clara and Robert Schumann lived in this house. Since 1995 it houses a museum about its famous inhabitants. As one of Leipzig's Musical Heritage Sites it got the European Heritage Label in 2017.
