On 3rd August arrived two covers with very nice postmarks from the Greater Reno Stamp & Cover Show. The first postmark shows Apollo 15's Lunar Roving Vehicle from 1971 and the other shows the Mars Rover Perseverance and its small Helicopter.
On 10th August arrived this cover about the Centenary of Nebraska's Big Rodeo. The two stamps on the right are from a set of ten about Wild Orchids issued on 21st February 2020. Interestingly the photographer of these stamps, Jim Fowler from South Carolina, is actually a stamp collector. The other stamp celebrates the Centenary of the Metropolitan Opera (issued 14-09-1983).
The card in this cover shows Tecolote in New Mexico. According to Wikipedia this is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in San Miguel County with a population of 298 as of the 2010 census.
This cover arrived on 13th August and the postmark is about the Neshoba County Fair. Three more Cloudscapes are used.
I like the view on this card with the many flying birds.
A delicious postmark from Minnesota's Home Made Pie Capital was used on this cover. It arrived on 14th August and the stamps form a complete set about Old Cars (issued 25-08-1988).
The card shows Cathedral Rock known from different Western movies.
On 17th August arrived this cover with three stamps from a set of eighteen tracing the evolution of the US Flag (issued 14-06-2000) and a special postmark about Lewis and Clark.
The Cliff Palace in the Mesa Verda National Park in the State of Colorado is shown on this card. The Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 and is known for its ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings. It is since 1978 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
On 19th August came this cover with Olympic stamps and a postmark about Monticello, but that is hard to read. The stamps are all about the Summer Olympics 1984 in Los Angeles, but are from different sets. The first stamp about weightlifting is from a set of four issued 8th April 1983 while the other three are from another set of four issued on 17th June 1983. It seems like five rather similar of these sets were issued between April 1983 and May 1984.
Inside the card shows a scene that might again come directly from a Western movie.
On 20th August arrived three covers. The first one has this great postmark from the Great American Stamp Show organised by the American Philatelic Society in Rosemont near Chicago. The left stamp is from a set of four about American Inventors (issued 21-09-1983) and on the right are two more Wild Orchids.
Did you know that the University of New Mexico has a Duck Pond? Mine definitely has none.
Four older stamps were used on this second cover of 20th August. The left stamp is about Breast Cancer Awareness (issued 29-07-1998). This stamp was later reissued in 2014 and also other countries used the same design. The other three stamps are from a set of ten about Special Occasions (issued 20-04-1987). The postmark is from the Knik Museum.
The card shows Acoma Pueblo near Albuquerque. Also known as Sky City, this is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited town in the USA.
Some more older stamps were used on the last cover of the day. The stamp on the right is from a set of fifty which all show similar Greetings for all US States (issued 04-04-2002). This one shows Louisiana. The stamp on the left shows Francis Ouimet (issued 13-06-1988), the first Amateur Golfer to win the US Championships, and in the middle are two stamps from the long-running Black Heritage series. Those show Civil Rights Leader Asa Philip Randolph (issued 03-02-1989) and Actress Hattie McDaniel (issued 25-01-2006), who for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind became the first African American to win an Oscar. The postmark is about the Czech Festival in Wilber.
The card shows Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. On the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992, it is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan people and is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the USA.
On 23rd August four more covers arrived. The first one bears another American Inventor, two Wild Orchids and a second postmark of the Great American Stamp Show.
The card shows the Petrified Forest National Park in the US State of Arizona. The Petrified Forest National Park was established in 1962. It is known for its large deposits of fossils and petrified wood. On the backside it has two postmarks from the park.
Also the second cover of the day has an Inventor, two Wild Orchids and a postmark from Rosemont.
Here the card shows a map of the Santa Fe Trail, a 19th-century route through central North America that connected Franklin in Missouri with Santa Fe in New Mexico.
On the third cover of the day are three nice stamps about Famous Trains. They are from a set of five issued on 26th August 1999. The other smaller stamp shows physicist Chester Carlson (issued 21-10-1988) and the postmark is about Yogi Berra, a famous baseball catcher, manager and coach.
I really like this card. Roswell is famous around the World for the Roswell UFO Incident of 1947 and this alien connection made it a popular tourist destination. It is also the fifth largest city in New Mexico. Shown on the card is the International UFO Museum, which opened in 1991.
The last cover of the day got a postmark about the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. The stamp on the left is from a series about the Universal Postal Union and shows a detail of Five Feminine Virtues by Hokusai (issued 06-06-1974). There are in total eight stamps in this set which all show international artworks with letters. The other two stamps are from a set of four about Hip Hop Culture (issued 01-07-2020).
The card shows some views along the Turquoise Trail in New Mexico.
On 24th August arrived two covers. The right stamps on the first cover honour Ruth Aiko Asawa (issued 13-08-2020), an American sculptor best known for her wire sculptures. The other stamp is another one from the set about the Universal Postal Union and shows an artwork by Goya. The postmark celebrates the Centenary+1 of Rhododendron in Oregon. This is a funny way to honour a cancelled jubilee.
The card inside shows another view of the University of New Mexico. This one looks more like an university than a duck pond.
The second cover of the day has some more Cloudscapes and a postmark from Lewistown.
The card shows the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. This former Roman Catholic church is said to have been built by noone less than Saint Joseph, the legal father of Jesus. It is known for its unusual helix-shaped spiral staircase, the "Miraculous Stair". You can see it on the card. Not sure if this is really unusual.
On 26th August arrived this fourth cover with Inventor, Wild Orchids and Great American Stamp Show postmark.
The card shows another view of the Petrified Forest National Park.
On 27th August arrived this cover with Cloudscapes and a postmark of the USCGC Eagle, the training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard and one of only two active commissioned sailing vessels in the United States military today. The ship started its career as Nazi Germany's sail training ship Horst Wessel in 1936 and was taken by the USA as war reparations after World War II.
The card I guess has a connection to the Día de los Muertos.
The last cover of August arrived on the last day of the month and bears a Raphael stamp from the Universal Postal Union set, two other Hip Hop Culture stamps and a postmark about an event called Urich Reunion.
The card shows some more petrified wood from the Petrified Forest National Park.
