China: Potala Palace in Tibet

Yesterday I got five postcards: my first card from Tibet, one from the United Kingdom and three from Germany.

Tibet is a part of China since it was incorporated in 1951. Once it was an independent country. In 1965 the Tibet Autonomous Region was formed. It is the second-largest province-level division of China by area.

The card shows the Jokhang Temple and the Potala Palace in Tibet's capital Lhasa. The Potala Palace is the former winter palace of the Dalai Lama since the 7th century. It is a symbol of the the central role the Tibetan Buddhism had in the traditional administration of Tibet. The Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace is since 1994 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
