Germany: Antikolonialdenkmal in Bremen

On 10th December I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows the Antikolonialdenkmal in Bremen. The Antikolonialdenkmal was originally erected in 1931 as main monument to Germany's colonial past, in 1990 however it was rededicated as an anticolonial monument. In the years since then it became a place of active debate over the dark sides of the German imperialism in Africa and Namibia in particular. 

A nice stamp was used here. It is the most recent stamp in the series about Childhood Heroes (issued 02-12-2021) and shows Bibi and Tina. Great to get this stamp on "real" (commercial) mail and not only on the philatelic cards I sent to myself. As the postage will be increased in January, there is just one month to get this stamp properly used without extra stamps. In addition it was cancelled with the Covid-19 postmark from the mail sorting centre 28 in Bremen.

Germany: Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum

On 9th December I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows a Christmassy view of the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Bremen's Böttcherstraße. The Böttcherstraße is a short street that is a main cultural landmark and tourist attraction in the city due to its unusual architecture. Mainly erected between 1922 and 1931 at the behest of coffee trader Ludwig Roselius, the street is a rare example of Expressionist architecture. The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is one of the most striking buildings in the street. This museum about the important early Expressionist artist Paula Modersohn-Becker was opened in 1927 and is the first museum in the World solely dedicated to a female artist. 

A stamp about the Star of Bethlehem (issued 03-11-2014) was used here.

Germany: Kunsthalle Bremen

Last Friday I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows an empty room of the Kunsthalle Bremen. The Kunsthalle Bremen is an art museum in Bremen. It was founded in 1849 and is today the only German museum with an extensive art collection from the 14th to 21st century which is still in private ownership. Currently a special exhibition about icons is shown in the complete building and the permanent exhibition will just return in May. Highlights of the collection are currently shown in Bilbao. For the special exhibition only one artwork is shown in each room, so at the moment you can actually see nearly empty rooms.

Germany: Vincent van Gogh's Field with Poppies

On Thursday I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows Vincent van Gogh's Field with Poppies. It is part of the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen. Back in 1910, when the painting was bought by the Kunsthalle, it caused the Bremen Artists' Dispute about the status of modern art in German museums.

I bought this card when I recently visited the Kunsthalle Bremen.

My Trip to the Kunsthalle Bremen

Yesterday I visited the Kunsthalle Bremen.

The Kunsthalle Bremen is an art museum in Bremen. It was founded in 1849 and is today the only German museum with an extensive art collection from the 14th to 21st century which is still in private ownership. Its collection includes paintings by Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Beckmann, Paula Modersohn-Becker and many others. Currently a special exhibition about icons is shown in the complete building and the permanent exhibition will just return in May. Highlights of the collection are currently shown in Bilbao.

Among the new stamps that were issued yesterday was also one about Vincent van Gogh's Field with Poppies, a painting from the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen. To commemorate the issue of this stamp a special postmark was available, which I got on the card above.

I also bought a special limited edition cover with the new stamp and the special postmark.

On my way back home I made a small stop in Hanover. There I was able to buy a maxicard about another new stamp set. It shows a view of Bonn and the Siebengebirge.

Germany: Botanika in Bremen

On 20th November I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows the Botanika in Bremen. The Botanika is a science centre about the nature and biological diversity. It was opened in 2003.

Germany: Bremen Hauptbahnhof

On 13th November I got five postcards: two from Germany, one from Thailand, one from Austria and one from Japan.

One of the cards from Germany shows Bremen Hauptbahnhof. Bremen Hauptbahnhof was built in the style of the Renaissance Revival between 1885 and 1889. Today it is one of the most important train stations in Northern Germany.

Germany: Freimarkt in Bremen

Last Tuesday I got a postcard from Germany.

It is about the Freimarkt in Bremen. The Freimarkt is a fair that was first held in 1035. It is one of the oldest fairs in Germany and one of the largest in Northern Germany.

Germany: "Antarctica" in Bremen

On Tuesday I got four postcards: two from Germany, one from Switzerland and one from the USA.

One of the cards from Germany is an advertising card for the exhibition "Antarctica" at the Übersee-Museum in Bremen. The exhibition "Antarctica" was shown between the 27th October 2018 and the 28th April 2019. It offered the chance to accompany Luc Jacquet, the director of the film March of the Penguins, on an expedition to Antarctica.

Germany: Seute Deern

On 28th June I got four postcards: two from Germany and two from Israel.

One of the cards from Germany shows the figurehead of the Seute Deern, a ship from the collection of the German Maritime Museum. The German Maritime Museum is the national shipping museum of Germany. It is used for exhibition and research.

I bought this card when I was in Bremerhaven in 2017.

Germany: Übersee-Museum in Bremen

Last Wednesday I was in Bremen. There I visited the Übersee-Museum and bought this card for my collection.

The Übersee-Museum was opened in 1896. In its exhibitions it combines natural history and ethnography to present the life in Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. It is one of the most visited museums in Germany.

Germany: Christmas Market in Bremen

Last Saturday I got three postcards from Germany.

One of them shows the Christmas Market in front of Bremen's Town Hall. The Christmas Market in front of the Town Hall is the oldest of the three Christmas Markets in Bremen. It was first held in 1857 and is today one of the largest Christmas Markets in Germany.

Germany: Town Musicians of Bremen

Last Saturday I got four postcards: two from Germany, one from Croatia and one from Italy.

One of the cards from Germany is a 3D card of the statue of the Town Musicians of Bremen. The Town Musicians of Bremen is a fairy tale of the Brothers Grimm about a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster leaving their owners to become Town Musicians in Bremen but after expelling crooks from their house in the forest they stayed there. The statue was built in 1953 and was designed by Gerhard Marcks.

Germany: Bremen Cathedral

Last Friday I got six postcards: one from Germany, two from Spain, one from Croatia, one from Poland and one from Japan.

The card from Germany is a 3D card of the Bremen Cathedral. The Bremen Cathedral was built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style. Until the 13th century it was reconstructed in the Gothic Style. A special sight of the cathedral is the Bleikeller, an excellent place to preserve bodies of the dead in amazing form. Today eight mummies can be seen there.

Germany: Cathedral Museum in Bremen

Last Friday I was in Bremen to visit a special exhibition at the Cathedral Museum. Luckily I also got a few cards of the museum.

The Cathedral Museum is located in an adjacent building of the Bremen Cathedral. It was founded in 1987 to show the finds from the Medieval bishop tombs.

Germany: Lighthouses

On Friday I got three postcards from Germany.

One of them shows various lighthouses from the North Sea Coast.

I bought this card earlier this year in Bremerhaven.

The Pilsum Lighthouse (upper row middle) was built between 1889 and 1891, but already in 1915 it was deactivated. It is one of the best-known symbols of East Frisia and grew in popularity as a result of a film by comedian Otto Waalkes.

The Bremerhaven Front Light (upper row right) is in operation since 1893. It is known for its unique form.
