Germany: Lower Germanic Limes

On Tuesday I got four postcards from Germany.

One of them shows various views of the Rhine in Neuss-Grimlinghausen. In Roman times the river Rhine divided the Roman province of Germania inferior from Germania Magna. The border was guarded by a chain of castra for auxiliary troops, which is known as Lower Germanic Limes. Today the Lower Germanic Limes is located in the Netherlands and the German States of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The castra at modern day Neuss-Grimlinghausen only survived as not visible ground monument, but a watchtower was reconstructed. The Lower Germanic Limes seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

EDIT: The Lower German(ic) Limes was inscribed in July 2021.

Germany: Jägerhof Palace

On Tuesday I got four postcards from Germany.

One of them shows Jägerhof Palace. Jägerhof Palace was built in the style of the Rococo between 1752 and 1763 at the behest of Elector Charles Theodore of Bavaria. Later it became a residence of the Hohenzollern family and since 1955 it is used as museum.

Germany: Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf

On Tuesday I got four postcards from Germany.

One of them is from the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf. The Goethe Museum is housed at the Jägerhof Palace since 1987. It shows nearly 700 original evidences of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which are mainly from the private collection of the publisher Anton Kippenberg.

My Trip to Lüneburg

On Monday I got a postcard from Germany.

It is the Chronicle card of Lüneburg. Lüneburg emerged from a small village next to the castle from where the Principality of Lüneburg-Brunswick was governed. In 956 the salt spring was mentioned for the first time, which generated the town's wealth over the next centuries. Around 1200 town privileges were awarded to Lüneburg and in 1371 the town became largely independent. Later it became an important member of the Hanseatic League. 

I mailed this card to me when I visited Lüneburg on Saturday.

The German Salt Museum was founded in the old production facilities of the Lüneburg Saltworks when they were closed in 1980. It tells the history of the salt trade in Lüneburg and salt in general.

The Town Hall of Lüneburg was constructed from 1230 onwards and today still houses the town council of Lüneburg. It is said to be the largest Medieval town hall in Northern Germany.

The treadwheel crane at Lüneburg's old harbour was first mentioned in 1330. It was used to ship the salt from and firewood for the Saltworks. Today it is a landmark of Lüneburg.

The Museum Lüneburg was opened in 2015, after three older museums were merged. Its collection is focused on archaeology, culture and natural history.

The Saint Michael's Church was built between 1376 and 1434. It is an important example of the Brick Gothic. Between 1700 and 1702 Johann Sebastian Bach was a member of the church's choir.

The Saint Nicholas' Church is the youngest and smallest of the three main churches of Lüneburg. It was built between 1407 and 1440 in the style of the Brick Gothic.

Germany: Heidelberg University

On Saturday I got two postcards: one from Germany and one from France.

The card from Germany shows the Heidelberg University. The Heidelberg University was founded in 1386 and is thus the oldest university in Germany and one of the oldest in Europe. In 1518 the university organised the Heidelberg Disputation, during which Martin Luther defended his theses. It is a German Excellence University and is often ranked as one of the best universities in Europe.

France: Le Touquet-Paris-Plage

On Saturday I got two postcards: one from France and one from Germany.

The card from France shows various views of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is a commune in northern France. It is said to be the most elegant holiday resort of northern France and is a popular destination for rich Parisians.

Italy: Miramare Castle in Trieste

On Thursday I got three postcards: one from Italy, one from Germany and one from the Australian Antarctic Territory.

The card from Italy shows the Miramare Castle in Trieste. Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is the capital of the Italian Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Between 1947 and 1954 the city was an independent state under the international protection of the United Nations Security Council.

The Miramare Castle was built between 1856 and 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian. Today it is used as museum.

AAT: Antarctic neosquid

On Thursday I got three postcards: one from the Australian Antarctic Territory, one from Italy and one from Germany.

The card from the Australian Antarctic Territory shows an Antarctic neosquid. The Antarctic neosquid is found in depths of 0 to 2800m in the Antarctic Ocean. It feeds on Antarctic krill, Antarctic silverfish and other squids. 

The card is a maxicard. The stamp is from a set of four stamps about East Antarctic Deep Sea Creatures and was issued on 7th March 2017.

The card is prepaid.

Germany: Wolfsburg Castle

On Thursday I got three postcards: one from Germany, one from the Australian Antarctic Territory and one from Italy.

The card from Germany shows Wolfsburg Castle. Wolfsburg Castle was first mentioned in 1302. It was built as medieval lowland and water castle, but was later turned into a representative palace and is known as the northeastern-most example of the Weser Renaissance. Today the castle is a cultural centre of the city of Wolfsburg and its carriage house is home to the Town History Museum.

I bought the card when I recently visited Wolfsburg.

Schmalkalden is a town in the German State of Thuringia. In 1531 the Schmalkaldic League, a defensive alliance of Lutheran princes within the Holy Roman Empire, was founded in Schmalkalden. The league was broke up after Emperor Charles V's victory in the Schmalkaldic War between 1546 and 1547.
