On Wednesday I received two postcards: one from Germany and one from Japan.
The card from Germany was sent by my dad when he was on a trip to Heligoland. The card shows the Lange Anna at the northwestern tip of Heligoland. Heligoland is the only deep-sea island of Germany. In 1814 Denmark ceded Heligoland to the United Kingdom and in 1890 the United Kingdom gave it up to Germany. During the Second World War it was again captured by the United Kingdom, but gave back to Germany in 1952. Today Heligoland is a part of the EU, but not of the customs area of the EU.
