In 2018 the whole World is celebrating the Centenary of the End of World War I, but not in Germany. Here we celebrate the Centenary of the Proclamation of the German Republic on 9th November 1918 and thus the beginning of the democracy in Germany. For this jubilee there are many events and exhibitions around Germany, but unfortunately also this jubilee is not really celebrated philatelically. Instead of a special stamp just a prepaid was issued on 2nd November.
My hometown Braunschweig played an interesting role during the first days of the Republic. Duke Ernst Augustus of Braunschweig was the first German monarch who abdicated in the course of the German Revolution and in December the local women were the first in Germany to use their new suffrage in an election. Later it was also the centre of a leftist uprising, that was soon suppressed.
Actually I hoped that a special postmark would be available, but unfortunately I just got a normal postmark yesterday on the 8th November, the day Ernst Augustus abdicated. I used on a postcard showing revolutionary workers and sailors in Braunschweig.
