Austria: Lake Neusiedl

On 18th October I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows various views of the Lake Neusiedl Area. The Lake Neusiedl is a lake in the Austrian State of Burgenland on the border with Hungary. It is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe and the largest lake in Austria. The reed around the lake is an important habitat for animals like migratory birds. The area is especially known for its white storks and has been a meeting place of different cultures for already eight millennia. Since 2001 is the Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site of Austria and Hungary.

The stamp celebrates the Centenary of the Burgenland (issued 15-10-2021). This region was originally a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, but after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I the area came to Austria, as big parts of the population were German-speaking. In 1921 it was officially called Burgenland and became a state of the Austrian Republic.

Thank You very much Anita!
