Austria: Lake Neusiedl

On 18th October I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows various views of the Lake Neusiedl Area. The Lake Neusiedl is a lake in the Austrian State of Burgenland on the border with Hungary. It is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe and the largest lake in Austria. The reed around the lake is an important habitat for animals like migratory birds. The area is especially known for its white storks and has been a meeting place of different cultures for already eight millennia. Since 2001 is the Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site of Austria and Hungary.

The stamp celebrates the Centenary of the Burgenland (issued 15-10-2021). This region was originally a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, but after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I the area came to Austria, as big parts of the population were German-speaking. In 1921 it was officially called Burgenland and became a state of the Austrian Republic.

Austria: Fishermen's Church in Rust

On 14th June I got three postcards from Austria.

One of them shows the Fishermen's Church in Rust. Rust is a town on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl and the Fishermen's Church is the building with the highest historic value in the town's old city. This fortified church dates back to the 12th century. Nowadays it is however not used as church anymore, but as venue for exhibitions and events. As part of the Fertö/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is the church since 2001 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Both postmark and stamp (issued 04-06-2021) also show the Fishermen's Church, but from a different point of view.

A matching stamp about viticulture in the Southern Burgenland was used on the card and got cancelled with the First Day Special Postmark.

Austria: Eisenstadt

Last Thursday I got two postcards from Austria.

One of them shows various views of Eisenstadt. Eisenstadt is the capital of the Austrian State of Burgenland. With just around 15000 inhabitants it is the smallest Austrian state capital and the 41st largest city of Austria. Under the Hungarian noble family of Eszterházy it was an important cultural centre. During that time many expelled Jews from Vienna resettled in Eisenstadt, Joseph Haydn lived in the town and also Maria Theresa visited the Schloss Esterházy.
