cover from the USA

On 16th December I got a cover from the USA.

Five nice stamps were used here. The four stamps on the right form a complete set called Message Monsters (issued 24-09-2021). The sheet comes with small stickers that can be used to decorate the stamps and although I personally like them, they were not very well received by many other stamp collectors. In the online Linn's 2021 U.S. Stamp Popularity Poll they are currently in the lead for Worst Design and Least Necessary among the commemorative stamps. The other stamp commemorates the 500th birth anniversary of Martin Luther (issued 10-11-1983).

In the cover were six postcards: four maxicards from the United Nations and two other cards.

This card is the most special, as it is my first from the United Nations in Geneva. Shown on it is a view of the Palais des Nations. It was originally built between 1929 and 1938 to serve as headquarters of the League of Nations and since 1946 it houses one of the four main offices of the United Nations. Every year roughly 8000 smaller and bigger international meetings take place there. The stamp was issued in 1991 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Postal Administration, the body that is responsible for the UN stamps used in the three offices in Geneva, New York and Vienna.

The next card shows an exterior view of the United Nations Headquarters in New York and a very interesting stamp was used on it. Although the postmark is just from 2019, the stamp is actually from the first UN stamp set ever. Together with five other definitive stamps it was issued on 24th October 1951. It is interesting to notice that this stamp is inscribed in Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. These were at the time the five official languages of the United Nations. Arabic was added as official language in 1973. Nowadays however the UN stamps are incribed in French, English and German on the stamps for the offices in Geneva, New York and Vienna respectively. Official stamps for the offices in Geneva and Vienna by the way followed much later than the stamps from New York. I still wonder whether there is a possibility for stamps from the UN office in Nairobi in the near future.

The second card was also turned into a maxicard with the same stamp. This card shows the chamber of the United Nations Trusteeship Council, one of the six principal organs of the organisation established to help ensure that trust territories were administered in the best interests of their inhabitants and of international peace and security. The trust territories were mostly former mandates of the League of Nations or territories taken from nations defeated at the end of World War II and by 1994 have all attained self-government or independence. The organ is thus not really needed anymore and is inactive for over 25 years. It is however not eliminated, as that would require a revision of the UN Charter.

Although it looks similar to the long-running Endangered Species series, this maxicard from Geneva is actually from a seperate issue about Tropical Rainforests. This stamp from Geneva shows Orangutans, New York shows a Jaguar and Vienna chose the Ocelot. The card reminded me of a TED-Ed video I recently watched called "How smart are orangutans?". It is rather short, but you should check it out.

The other two cards show a view of Canada's Yukon and Carnival in Mexico.

Thank You very much Sam-Quito!

cover from Austria

On 28th August I got not only a postcard but also a cover from Austria.

The stamp on the cover shows an artwork by Benedetto Gennari from the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It was issued on 24th February 2021.

In the cover were three philatelic collectibles.

One of them was this maxicard from the United Nations in Vienna about Endangered Species (issued 07-04-2021). This stamp series is now already running for nearly three decades. When I visited the UN in Vienna some years ago, I had used some of them on my mail and from New York I was lucky enough to get the first set of the series on a postcard. That one was issued in 1993.

The other two pieces were FDCs from the Vatican. The first is about the 500th anniversary of the Saint Peter's Basilica and the other honours the opening of the Philatelic and Numismatic Museum.

Thank You very much Anita!

United Nations: Vienna International Centre

On 26th November I got three postcards including one from the United Nations.

Although I had shown a card about the Vienna International Centre just a few days ago, this card is different. It is my first card sent from one of the United Nations Post Offices since 2015. I already have a few cards from Vienna, mainly sent during my trip there in 2014, and New York, but so far I have never got a postcard from the office in Geneva.

Also on this card the stamps commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (issued 24-10-2020) and it even got the First Day Special Postmark. Like usual similar sheets were issued for the offices in Geneva and New York. However this is not the complete sheet. The upper part with a message by António Guterres had to be cut off to fit the sheet on the card.

 Thank You very much Anita!

Austria: Vienna International Centre

On 29th October I got two postcards: one from Austria and one from Hong Kong.

The card from Austria shows the M Building at the Vienna International Centre. The Vienna International Centre was built between 1973 and 1979 by Austria and the City of Vienna for housing international organisations, as Austria had offered the United Nations an International Centre in 1967. Today it is home to the CTBTO, the IAEA, the UNCITRAL, the UNIDO, the UNODC, the UNHCR, the UNOOSA and the ICPDR. The M Building was built to host the conferences during the asbestos removal works in the other buildings between 2004 and 2013 and as the Vienna International Centre needs permanently more space for conferences.

Like many other countries around the World also Austria issued a stamp about the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (issued 24-10-2020). It shows an aerial view of the Vienna International Centre and was used together with its First Day Special Postmark on this card.

United Nations: Security Council Chamber

Today I got a postcard from the United Nations.

It shows the Security Council Chamber at the United Nations complex in New York. The Security Council is one of the most important organs of the United Nations. Its task is the preservation of international peace and security and thus it can accept new members to the United Nations, change the United Nations Charter and authorise military actions. It was formed following World War II in 1946. The five permanent members of the council are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the USA. There are also ten non-permanent members from five regions changing regularly. At the moment the non-permanent members are Angola, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain and Venezuela. The Security Council is often criticised and there are different plans the reform it.

With a great stamp:

United Nations: Headquarters in New York City

Today I got four postcards: my first card from the United Nations, one from Singapore and two from Thailand.

The United Nations were founded in 1945 as International Organisation. The most important tasks of the United Nations are the protection of the world peace, the compliance of the law of nations, the protection of the human rights and the advancement of the international cooperation.
The United Nations issues since 1951 their own stamps. The United Nations stamps are issued in Geneva (in SFr.), Vienna (in Euro) and New York (in USD).

The card shows the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. The Headquarters of the United Nations was built between 1948 and 1952 on land donated by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and since its completion it serves as the official headquarters of the United Nations. The headquarters contains the seats of the General Assembly and Security Council. The land is technically extraterritorial through a treaty agreement with the U.S. government. There are also regional headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Nairobi (Kenya).
The card shows also some of the flags in front of the headquarters. They are arranged in English alphabetical order.

With nice stamps:
Endangered animals (three from set of four) (issued 03-03-1993)
This are the first stamps of the Endangered Animals series issued annually. The stamps show a Giant Clam, a Hairy-nosed Wombat and a Whooping Crane. The last stamp from the set got lost during the journey. :(

Thank You very much "youleyuan" !
