Norway: New Munch Museum

On Tuesday I got my stamp order from Norway which also included a maxicard about the New Munch Museum in Oslo. 

Edvard Munch is probably the most famous Norwegian artist of all times. When he died in 1944, he left everything he owned in terms of paintings, sketches, photographs and sculptures to Oslo Municipality. Already in 1963, for Munch's 100th birthday, a museum was opened with this donation and other artworks, but back in 2008 a decision was reached to build a new museum for the collection, as the old museum was insufficient to display and maintain the collection. The new museum with 13 floors on Oslo's waterfront was designed by Juan Herreros and will open in fall 2020. It was created to reach a broader audience and to experience Edvard Munch's life and art in a completely new way. To commemorate the new museum the Norwegian Post issued a stamp (issued 12-06-2020), which was used on this maxicard. I really like the design of the stamp with the new building in the front and a painting by Munch in the background. The special postmark shows the museum from a different perspective and shown on the card is Munch's painting Train Smoke from 1900. This is just one of the 28000 works of Edvard Munch, which are part of the museum's collection. The most famous for sure is The Scream, of which two of four versions are housed in the Munch Museum. 

Norway: Midnight Sun seen from the North Cape

On Saturday I got a postcard from Norway.

It shows the midnight sun seen from the North Cape. The North Cape is a cape on the northern coast of the island of Magerøya in Northern Norway. It is the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Arctic Ocean. Often it is inaccurately referred to as the northernmost point of Europe. Although this is not true, it is still the northernmost point in Europe that can be accessed by car. The midnight sun can be seen there from the 14th May to the 31st July. It is a popular tourist destination.

Norway: Rock Art of Alta

Yesterday I got six postcards: one from Norway, one from Mexico, my first card from Kazakhstan, one from Finland, one from Portugal and one from Germany.

The card from Norway shows the rock carvings at Alta. The rock carvings at Alta are located near the Arctic Circle and show how humans lived in the Far North in prehistoric times. In 1991 an open-air museum was opened at the site. The Rock Art of Alta is since 1985 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Norway: Munch Museum in Oslo

Today I got two postcards: one from Norway and one from Turkey.

The card from Norway shows Edvard Munch's The Scream from the collection of the Munch Museum in Oslo. Edvard Munch was born in 1863. He was a famous Norwegian artist and is considered to be the pioneer of the Expressionism. When he died in 1944, he donated his works and articles to Oslo. The Munch Museum finally opened in 1963. It shows two of the four versions of The Scream, Munch's most famous painting.

Norway: Bryggen of Bergen

On Monday I got eleven postcards including one from Norway.

The card from Norway shows the Bryggen of Bergen. Bergen was founded in 1070. In 1350 the Hanseatic League established a kontor in Bergen and soon the city became the centre of the Hanseatic activity in Norway. In their history the wooden houses of the Bryggen, where the kontor was located, were often destroyed by fire, but always they were rebuilt. In 1872 a Hanseatic Museum opened in the Bryggen. Bergen is today the second largest city of Norway. The Bryggen is since 1979 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Bergen was the European Capital of Culture in 2000.

Norway: Kon-Tiki Museum

On Thursday I got four postcards: one from Norway, one from Slovenia and two from Malaysia.

The card from Norway shows a room of the Kon-Tiki Museum in Oslo. The Kon-Tiki Museum was opened in 1949 and since 1957 it is located in a new building. The museum was built to show artefacts of the Kon-Tiki expedition, an expedition from Peru to Polynesia led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl to prove his thesis that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times. The main exhibit of the museum is the original vessel from the expedition. Also a library is located in the museum.

Norway: Geirangerfjord

Yesterday I got four postcards: one from Norway, one from Thailand, one from Croatia and one from Indonesia.

The card from Norway shows the Geirangerfjord. The Geirangerfjord is one of the most famous fjords in Norway and one of the longest and deepest fjords in the World. It is said to be an archetypical fjord. Since 2005 are the West Norwegian Fjords, the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Norway: Viking Ship Museum

Today I got five postcards: one from Norway, three from Germany and one from Taiwan.

The card from Norway shows a carved animalpost from Oseberg shown at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The Viking Ship Museum opened in 1926 and shows many finds of the Viking Age including three ships. It was recently voted as one of the World's top 50 museums by The Times.

Norway: Oslo

Yesterday was a very nice surprise postcard in my letterbox. It was my first postcard from Norway and what is even better the card shows Norway's capital Oslo.

Norway is a country in Scandinavia bordering on Sweden, Russia and Finland. Norway is a member of the UN and of the OECD. Norway's head of state is King Harald V.

Oslo is not only the capital of Norway but also Norway's largest city.

The card shows the Oslo Harbour with Akerhus Fortress, the City Hall (where the Nobel Peace Prices are lent) and Aker Brygge.
