Myanmar: Shwedagon Pagoda

On Wednesday I got a postcard from Myanmar.

It shows the Shwedagon Pagoda. The Shwedagon Pagoda is the most famous stupa in Myanmar and the country's religious centre. It is said to contain relics of the last four Buddhas. In recent years it also became a tourist attraction and symbol of Myanmar.

Stamps:
71st Anniversary of Independence (from set of three) (issued 04-01-2019)
In seven years of stamp collecting I think I have never seen a stamp printed in such a poor quality. Interestingly the pictures I have seen of this stamp on the Internet look much better. I wonder, is it maybe a forgery?
110th Anniversary of Yangon General Post Office (issued 20-09-2018)
Musical Instruments (two from set of four) (issued 14-09-2017)

Myanmar: Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

On Thursday I got a postcard from Myanmar.

It shows the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda or Golden Rock is a small pagoda built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves. According to the legend the rock is precariously perched on a strand of Buddha's hair. It is one of the holiest sites in Myanmar and a popular pilgrimage site and tourist destination.

Myanmar: General Post Office of Yangon

Today I got two postcards: one from Myanmar and one from South Korea.

The card from Myanmar shows the General Post Office of Yangon. Yangon is the largest city of Myanmar. Until 2005 it was also the country's capital, but then the State Peace and Development Council decided to move the capital to Naypyidaw. Today the city is still Myanmar's economic centre and the capital of Yangon Region. Compared to other cities in the region Yangon has many colonial buildings, but also an undeveloped infrastructure.

The General Post Office is housed in one of the many colonial buildings. It was moved to its current location in 1936 after its older building had been destroyed by an earthquake. The building is today under monumental protection.

The card was posted at the General Post Office itself.
Stamps:

Myanmar: Bagan

This is the 900th post on my blog! Thank You all of you for sending me all this nice postcards and covers with so many nice stamps!

Yesterday I got three postcards: my first card from Myanmar, one from Germany and one from Estonia.

Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia bordering on Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. Myanmar is officially called the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, but is also known as Burma. The capital of Myanmar is Naypyidaw.

The card shows Bagan. Bagan is one of the largest archaeological sites in Southeast Asia with over 2000 Buddhist monuments. Between the 9th and the 13th century it was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom unifying the regions of today's Myanmar. The stone inscriptions in Bagan are the most reliable source of the history of this kingdom. The site is one of Myanmar's most important tourist destinations. Bagan Archaeological Area and Monuments seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

EDIT:
Bagan is one of the new UNESCO World Heritage Sites of 2019.

With nice stamp:
27th SEA Games (from set of eight) (issued 02-09-2013)
The stamp shows the mascots of the games, the owls Shwe Yoe and Ma Moe.
with a special postmark from the General Post Office in Yangon

Thank You very much Matthew!
