Israel: Yad Vashem

On 28th June I got four postcards: two from Israel and two from Germany.

The two cards from Israel are about Yad Vashem. Yad Vashem is Israel's official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. It was founded in 1953. The complex includes both institutions for the scientific study of the Holocaust and for the education of the larger public. Today it is Israel's second most visited tourist site.

The first card shows the exit of the Holocaust History Museum. While the current museum was just opened in 2005, there has been already a museum at Yad Vashem since the beginning. In nine unterground galleries it tells the history of the Holocaust in chronological order from the Jewish life in Europa before the Holocaust, over the camps and the resistance to the new beginning in Israel.

Israel: Acre

On 26th June I got five postcards: two from Israel, one from Italy and two from Germany.

One of the cards from Israel shows various views of Acre. Acre is continuously inhabited since Phoenician time, which makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the World. In the 12th and 13th century it was one of the most important cities in the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. Although the remains of this period are almost intact and provide an exceptional inside in the era of the crusaders, the city is now mainly characteristic of an Ottoman fortified town of the 18th and 19th century. In 2001 the Old City of Acre became one of Israel's first two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The card from Israel shows the relief of a Menorah at the Necropolis of Bet She’arim. The Necropolis of Bet She’arim became the the primary Jewish burial place in the 2nd century after Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans. It was a place of activity of Rabbi Judah the Patriarch and a centre of the Jewish renewal. The catacombs are descriped as a treasury of artworks and inscriptions in Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew and Palmyrene. Since 2015 is the Necropolis of Bet She’arim on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Israel: White City of Tel Aviv

On Wednesday I got three postcards: two from Israel and one from Japan.

One of the cards from Israel shows the Zlotopolsky House in Tel Aviv's White City. Tel Aviv was founded in 1907 and developed as a metropolitan city under the British Mandate in Palestine. It was also an important destination for Jewish immigrants. After the State of Israel was founded in 1948, Tel Aviv became an important technological, financial and touristic centre and is also home to many foreign embassies. Among the Jewish immigrants were also many architects who were trained in Europe and who built the World's largest concentration of International Style buildings in Tel Aviv, the White City. The White City of Tel Aviv is since 2003 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Israel: Jerusalem

On Thursday I got two postcards: my first card from Israel and one from Belarus.

Israel is a country in the Middle East bordering on Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the Palestinian territories and Egypt. It is the World's only Jewish-majority state, one of the most educated countries in the World and the country with the highest standard of living in the Middle East. It is a member of the United Nations and the OECD.

The card shows the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the capital and largest city of Israel, although not all countries recognise Israel's rule over the city, as also the Palestinian territories claim it to be their capital. It is a holy city in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. As proposed by Jordan, the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls are since 1981 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
