22nd July 2023: Celtic Tomb of Hochdorf, Germany

The Celtic Tomb of Hochdorf is a reconstructed burial mound. As the tomb was not robbed over the centuries, some spectacular Celtic artifacts could be found there which are now in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart.

Germany: Karlsruhe

On 28th June I got a postcard from Germany.

It is a multiview from Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is the second largest town of the State of Baden-Württemberg and was once the capital of Baden. Since 1950 it is the seat of the Federal Court of Justice and since 1951 of the Federal Constitutional Court. 

The card was sent from the "new" philatelic shop in Karlsruhe and got cancelled with their special postmark, however after now over six months I can hardly call those shops new anymore.

Germany: New State Gallery in Stuttgart

On 22nd June I got two postcards from Germany.

One of them shows the New State Gallery in Stuttgart. The New State Gallery designed by James Stirling was built between 1979 and 1984. It is a masterpiece of Post-modernist architecture and turned the once provincial gallery into one of Europa's leading museums.

The stamp shows one half of a Bonn Panorama.

Germany: Maulbronn Monastery Complex

On 22nd June I got two postcards from Germany.

One of them shows the Maulbronn Monastery Complex. The Maulbronn Monastery was founded in 1147 by the Cistercians and the main buildings were built between the 12th and 16th century. The Monastery's church was built in Transitional Gothic style and had an influence on the spread of Gothic architecture in northern and central Europe. Today is the Maulbronn Monastery Complex considered the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastic complex north of the Alps. Some parts of Hermann Hesse's novel Beneath the Wheel are set there. Since 1993 is the Maulbronn Monastery Complex on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On 22nd June I got not only two postcards but also two covers including one from Germany.

One of my favourite stamps of 2020 was used on the German cover, Maya the Bee (issued 03-12-2020).

In the cover were eight cards about the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart. The Weissenhof Estate is a housing estate consisting of twenty-one buildings. It was built for the Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in 1927 and was an international showcase of the International style of modern architecture. Seventeen architects were involved in the design of the buildings including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. Because of bombing damage during World War II only eleven buildings survived until today. As a part of the Architectural Work of Le Corbusier are two buildings in the Weissenhof Estate (I think the third card shows one of them) since 2016 on the UNESCO World Heritage List and together with the other Werkbund Estates in Europa got the entire Weissenhof Estate also the European Heritage Label in 2019.

Germany: Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg

On 19th June I got six postcards: four from Germany and two from Brazil.

One of the cards from Germany shows the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg was founded in 1987, but it was not until 2002 that got its own building. The museum tells the history of Baden and Württemberg in the last 200 years. 

The often shown stamp of Lübeck was used here. I like the postmark saying Stamps Educate.

Germany: Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

On 19th June I got six postcards: four from Germany and two from Brazil.

One of the cards from Germany shows the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is a museum of modern and contemporary art and was opened in 2005. It houses an important collection of artworks by Otto Dix.

You can see a residential area in Lübeck on the stamp.

Germany: Württemberg State Museum

On 19th June I got six postcards: four from Germany and two from Brazil.

One of the cards from Germany shows a courtyard of the Württemberg State Museum. The Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart is a museum about the history of Württemberg, a former kingdom and now a part of the German State of Baden-Württemberg, and one of the most important museums in Germany. The collection dates back to the 16th century, but the museum was just opened in 1862. Highlights of the collection include one of the largest glass collections in the World and ivory carvings from the Vogelherdhöhle. Beside the main exhibition in Stuttgart the museum also has branches in other cities.

The stamp shows a part of a Bonn Panorama.

Germany: Fernsehturm Stuttgart

On 19th June I got six postcards: four from Germany and two from Brazil.

One of the cards from Germany shows the Fernsehturm Stuttgart. The Fernsehturm Stuttgart was the first telecommunications tower in the World constructed from reinforced concrete and an inspiration for many similar towers around the globe. As observation tower it has also become a popular tourist attraction.

Germany: Sophie Scholl

On 2nd June I got three postcards: two from Germany and one from Austria.

One of the cards from Germany is a Papersisters card about Sophie Scholl, one of the most famous Germans of the Resistance against the Nazism. 

I sent this card to myself with the new stamp about Sophie Scholl's Birth Centenary (issued 06-05-2021) and a special postmark from Forchtenberg, where she was born.

Germany: Geißenklösterle

On 2nd October I got four postcards: two from Germany and two from Austria. 

One of the cards from Germany shows the Geißenklösterle. The Geißenklösterle is an important archaeological site of the European Upper Paleolithic, as it contains traces of early prehistoric art from between 43000 and 30000 years ago. For example the oldest known musical instruments were found here. As one of the six Caves and Ice Age Art in the Swabian Jura it is since 2017 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This finally (again) completes my collection of German UNESCO Sites.

The card was cancelled with the Covid-19 postmark from the mail sorting centre 41 on World Postcard Day.

Germany: Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren

On 2nd October I got four postcards: two from Germany and two from Austria. 

One of the cards from Germany shows the Venus of Hohle Fels from the collection of the Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren. The Urgeschichtliches Museum Blaubeuren was opened in 1965 and is since 2012 a branch of the Archaeological State Museum of Baden-Württemberg. It shows important prehistoric artifacts from the Swabian Jura. The Venus of Hohle Fels for example is the oldest known undisputed example of a depiction of a human being in prehistoric art.

The card was sent on World Postcard Day and got the Covid-19 postmark from the mail sorting centre 41 in Mönchengladbach.

Germany: Freiburg im Breisgau

On Thursday I got three postcards: two from Germany and one from Germany.

One of the cards from Germany shows various views of Freiburg im Breisgau. Freiburg im Breisgau or Freiburg for short is a big city in the German State of Baden-Württemberg, the fourth largest of its state and the southern most of Germany. It is one of the traditional German university towns and in recent years also became famous for its high standard of living and advanced environmental practices. Not only it is an popular tourist destinations for itself but also it is the primary tourist entry point to the Black Forest. Between 1945 and 1952 it was the capital of the German State of (South) Baden before it was merged with Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern to form Baden-Württemberg. 

Just like on the recent card about the Freiburg Minster I also used the stamp about Freiburg's 900th anniversary (issued 02-07-2020) on this card. Four famous buildings from Freiburg are shown on the stamp: the Historical Merchants' Hall, the Martinstor, the Freiburg Minster and the University Library. All four you can also find on the card.

Germany: Freiburg Minster

On Friday I got four postcards from Germany.

One of them shows Freiburg Minster. Freiburg Minster was began around 1200 in the Romanesque style, but the construction continued in 1230 in Gothic style. Already the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt praised the beauty of the tower and today it is still considered to be a masterpiece of the Gothic style. As by a miracle it survived World War II without destructions although surrounding areas were completely destroyed. Since 1827 it is the cathedral of the newly erected Archdiocese of Freiburg.

Also this card I bought on the Internet. The stamp celebrates the 900th anniversary of Freiburg (issued 02-07-2020) and the First Day Special Postmark from Bonn also shows the Freiburg Minster. I prepared another card with this stamp, but that one travelled longer.

Germany: Krtek

On 17th March I got four postcards: three from Germany and one from the USA.

One of the cards from Germany shows Krtek. Krtek is a Czechoslovakian children's TV character created by Zdeněk Miler and first shown in 1957. At the beginning Krtek was able to speak, but then his creator decided that everybody should understand him, so now he just make some sounds. Since 2002 there are no new episodes.

I bought this card in my home town.

Germany: European Turtle Dove

Last Wednesday I got two postcards: one from Germany and one from Austria.

The card from Germany shows an European Turtle Dove. The European Turtle Dove is a migratory bird from the bird family Columbidae. Populations of the bird are in rapid decline across Europa and it has red list conservation status globally. In Germany it is the Bird of the Year for 2020.

I bought this card in my home town.

Germany: Mannheim Hauptbahnhof

On Tuesday I got five postcards: three from Germany, one from Italy and one from Estonia.

One of the cards from Germany shows Mannheim Hauptbahnhof. Mannheim Hauptbahnhof is the main train station of Mannheim and the second most important train station in the German State of Baden-Württemberg.

Germany: History of Heidelberg

On 25th June I got two postcards from Germany.

One of them is the Chronicle card of Heidelberg. Heidelberg was first mentioned in 1196. In 1386 the university was founded, which made the city a centre of Humanism and Reformation in the 15th and 16th century. It was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and the Nine Years' War. Today it is a popular tourist destination.
