Macedonia: Ohrid Region

On Tuesday I got three postcards: one from Macedonia, one from Germany and one from Japan.

The card from Macedonia shows various views of the Ohrid region. Lake Ohrid is a lake located on the Albanian-Macedonian border. It is the largest lake of Macedonia and one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. Ohrid is the largest town on the lake. It is also the eight-largest city of Macedonia and an important centre of tourism. The Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region is since 1979 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Macedonia: Skopje

On Thursday I got two postcards: my first card from Macedonia and one from the Ross Dependency.

Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe bordering on Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. In 1991 Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia. Due to a dispute with Greece over use of the name Macedonia it is officially known as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It is a member of the United Nations and is a candidate country for joining the European Union.

The card shows the Archaeological Museum and the Stone Bridge in Skopje. Skopje is the capital and largest city of Macedonia. The Archaeological Museum was built as part of the Skopje 2014 project, which intended to give Skopje a more classical appeal by the year 2014. The Stone Bridge is a bridge across the Vardar River. It is a landmark of Skopje and is shown on the city's coat of arms.
