22nd June 2023: Heidentor in Carnuntum, Austria

Carnuntum was a Roman fortress on the Danube Limes in modern day Lower Austria. It later became a big city and the capital of the Pannonia Superior province. Today it is among the most important Roman archaeological sites in Europa. It got the European Heritage Label in 2013 and in 2021 was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Danubian Limes. Shown on the card is the Heidentor, a late antique triumphal arch.

Austria: Baden bei Wien

On 27th April I got nine postcards: two from Austria, three from Turkey and four from Germany.

One of the cards from Austria shows the Kurhaus in Baden bei Wien. Baden bei Wien is a popular spa town since Roman times. Especially after the town was connected to Vienna and Graz by railway, thousands of Viennese began visiting each year to take the waters. One of the most famous visitors was Ludwig van Beethoven. During World War I the town served as a temporary seat of the Austro-Hungarian high command. As one of the eleven Great Spas of Europa is Baden bei Wien since 2021 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The stamp also shows the Kurhaus, which was built between 1884 and 1886 in a Neorenaissance style. This stamp was issued on 23rd April 2022 making Austria the first country to issue a stamp for the Great Spas. Such a pity that there was not an agreement for a joint issue of all seven countries or at least a few.

Austria: Alexander Roda Roda

On 27th April I got nine postcards: two from Austria, three from Turkey and four from Germany.

One of the cards from Austria shows Alexander Roda Roda. Alexander Roda Roda was an Austrian writer and satirist born in 1872. Since 1911 he was writing articles for the Neue Freie Presse, one of Austria's most respected newspapers, and especially during World War I produced over 700 articles as war correspondent for the paper. He also contributed to the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus and in the 1920s his humorous and satirical book publications were largely successful. He lived in Germany when the Nazis seized power in 1933, which forced him to move to Graz, which again he left after the Anschluss in 1938 for Switzerland and later the USA. Alexander Roda Roda died in New York in 1945.

For Alexander Roda Roda's 150th birthday the Austrian Post issued the big souvenir sheet used here on 22nd April.

Austria: Sankt Pölten

On 4th February I got two postcards: one from Austria and one from Italy.

The card shows multiple views of Sankt Pölten. Sankt Pölten is one of the oldest cities and also the ninth largest city in Austria. Since 1986 it is the capital of the Austrian State of Lower Austria. Until then Vienna remained the state's capital, although it had been a state in its own right since 1920.

The stamp shows enamel produced by Riess (issued 28-01-2022).

Austria: Franz Schubert

On 20th October I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows a portrait of Franz Schubert. Franz Schubert was an Austrian composer who despite his early death at the age of 31 left a big and diverse oeuvre. During his life the appreciation for his music was limited, but later musicians discovered his work and he is now considered to be among the greatest composers of Western Classical music and especialy of the early Romantic era.

A personalised stamp and a special postmark about the Bicentenary of Schubert's time in Sankt Pölten were used here. Schubert was invited to the town by the local bishop and there he composed parts of his opera Alfonso und Estrella.

Austria: Castles

On 10th September I got four postcards from Austria and as they are all connected to each other, I will show them in one post.

The first card shows various views of the Waldviertel, the northwestern part of the Austrian State of Lower Austria.

The stamp shows Burg Rapottenstein, which you can also find on the card. It was never conquered and is one of the best preserved castles in Austria.

The second card shows some views of the Austrian State of Salzburg. I have visited this state multiple times, but saw not much more than the capital, the city of Salzburg.

The stamp on this card shows Schloss Moosham in the State of Salzburg. It is still in private property, but can be visited and was used as filming location. In the late 17th century the castle gained notoriety by serving as the administrative center during the Zaubererjackl witch trials. These trials led to the execution of 139 people.

Shown on the third card is the Kufstein Fortress. The Kufstein Fortress was first mentioned in the 13th century. In its history it was often besieged and its possesion changed between Austria and Bavaria. Today it is one of the most famous sights of Tyrol. I see this castle every year on my way to my summer holidays in Tyrol and visited it once in 2016.

You probably already guessed by now, but the connection between the cards are the stamps. The four stamps were issued in a souvenir sheet on 4th September 2021 and the special about them is the art style, as they are all designed in the style of the Dispenser stamps, which apparently gained some popularity among stamp collectors. I wrote a bit about Dispenser stamps here. This stamp of course shows Kufstein Fortress and like all the others it was cancelled with the First Day Special Postmark.

The last card shows castles in Carinthia.

The last stamp shows Falkenstein Castle. I think it is funny to compare the image on the stamp with that one on the card in the lower left corner. Here it looks like the castle is located deep in the Alps, but on the card you can see a large bridge in the background.

Austria: Blitz-im-Winter

On 6th November I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows the cover of Kerstin Groeper's novel Blitz-im-Winter.

The card was sent with a special postmark about the Lower Austrian Children Summer Games.

Austria: Gloggnitz Castle

On 14th June I got three postcards from Austria.

One of them shows the Gloggnitz Castle in Lower Austria. Although this building is now known as Schloss or castle is was actually a Benedictine monastery. Parts of it date back to the 11th century.

The main stamp (issued 05-06-2021) used here is from the Austrian series about wine regions, the Thermenregion in Lower Austria in particular. Two definitives were used to reach the correct postage and all three stamps were cancelled with the First Day Special Postmark of the wine stamp.

Austria: Beethoventempel in Baden bei Wien

On Friday I got eight postcards from Austria.

One of them shows the Beethoventempel in Baden bei Wien. The Beethoventempel was erected in 1927 for Beethoven's death centenary. It is a popular destination for walks and is also used for small concerts in summer.

EDIT: As one of The Great Spa Towns of Europe is Baden bei Wien since July 2021 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

No, this card was not sent in September. In Austria it is just possible to get special postmarks for a very long time and it was used on this matching personalised Beethoven stamp.

Austria: Christmas Cars

On Friday I got eight postcards from Austria.

One of them shows many cars filled with presents and Christmas trees.

One of the Austrian Christmas stamps of last year (issued 08-11-2019) was used on the card. Actually there should be a Swarovski crystal on this stamp, but unfortunately it got lost during the journey. Here you can see the stamp in its full glory. A special postmark in the shape of a Christmas tree was used to cancel the stamp.
