Slovakia: Gerulata

Last Saturday I got a postcard from Slovakia.

It shows Gerulata. Gerulata was a Roman military camp in the province of Pannonia, which is now in a borough of Bratislava. It was built in the 2nd century as part of the Limes and was inhabited until the 4th century, when Roman legions withdrew from Pannonia. Today it is the largest Roman site in Slovakia and seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Bratislava City Museum has a branch in Gerulata.

EDIT: As of July 2021 Gerulata is now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Danubian Limes.

Slovakia: Čachtice Castle

On Tuesday I got three postcards: one from Slovakia and two from Germany.

The card from Slovakia shows the Čachtice Castle. The Čachtice Castle was built in the 13th century, but today it is just a ruin. The Blood Countess Elizabeth Báthory became lady of the castle in the late 16th century and also was imprisoned there in 1609, as she was convicted as serial killer and witch.

Slovakia: Spišský Hrad, Levoča and Spišská Kapitula

Today I got three postcards: one from Slovakia, one from Laos and one from Singapore.

The card from Slovakia shows the Spišský Hrad, the St James Church and the Old Town Hall in Levoča and the St Martin's Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula. The Spišský Hrad is one of the largest castles in Central Europe. The St James Church in Levoča houses the largest Gothic altar in Europe, which was created by Master Paul of Levoča in the 16th century, and the Old Town Hall is now home to a museum. The St Martin's Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula is one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Slovakia and the cathedral church of the Spiš diocese. Levoča, the Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments are since 1993 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Slovakia: Bratislava

Today I got two postcards: my first postcard from Slovakia and one from Germany.

Slovakia is a country in Central Europe bordering on the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary and Austria. Until 1992 Slovakia formed together with the Czech Republic the Czechoslovakia. Slovakia is a member of the UN, of the EU, of the OECD and of the NATO.

The card provides a great view on Slovakia's capital Bratislava. Bratislava is the political, cultural, and economic centre of Slovakia. Two special buildings on the card are the Bratislava Castle and the St. Martin's Cathedral. The Bratislava Castle is the main castle of Bratislava and since Slovakia joined the Eurozone in 2009 it has been shown on the 10c, 20c and 50c coins. The St. Martin's Cathedral was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830.
