3rd August 2023: Triple Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Triple Bridge comprises three bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It connects the historical medieval town with the central Prešeren Square. Dating back to the 13th century, it stands as the oldest bridge in Ljubljana. In the early 1930s the architect Jože Plečnik redesigned and expanded it. As one of the Works of Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana, described as Human Centred Urban Design, is the Triple Bridge since 2021 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Slovenia: Franja Partisan Hospital

On 26th November I got three postcards including one from Slovenia. 

It shows the Franja Partisan Hospital. The Franja Partisan Hospital was a secret World War II hospital run by the Slovene Partisans from December 1943 until the end of the war. Although both Allied and Axis soldiers were treated in the hospital, it was never discovered by the Wehrmacht. It is preserved as a museum and got the European Heritage Label in 2014.

The stamp is from a set of five about Wine Cellars and Stores (issued 13-07-2020). It was cancelled in Celje, the third-largest city in Slovenia.

The card from Slovenia shows Mirna Castle. Mirna Castle is one of the most beautiful and best renovated examples of medieval architecture in Slovenia.

It shows various views of Lendava. Lendava is the easternmost municipality in Slovenia in the region of Prekmurje. It is the centre of the Hungarian minority in Slovenia.

It shows a Karst Shepherd. The Karst Shepherd is a mountain dog from Slovenia. It is recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Slovenia: Škocjan Caves

Last Friday I got two postcards: one from Slovenia and one from Japan.

The card from Slovenia shows Schmidl's Hall at the Škocjan Caves. The Škocjan Caves are an exceptional system of limestone caves and one of the most famous caves in the World for the study of karstic phenomena. Since 1986 are the Škocjan Caves on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Last Friday I got not only two postcards but also two covers including one from Italy.

Inside was a postcard from Slovenia.

It shows the Kobarid Museum. The Kobarid Museum is a museum about the World War I battles of the Isonzo and of Kobarid. It was opened in 1990 and got the Museum Prize of the Council of Europe in 1993.

The region around Kobarid was located near the Isonzo Front and was hard fought between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy. After a long trench warfare the Battle of Kobarid, fought in October and November 1917, resulted in a victory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the collapse of the Italian Second Army. The battle is also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, Battle of Caporetto (Italian name of Kobarid) or Battle of Karfreit (German name of Kobarid).

Slovenia: Upper Carniola Region

On Saturday I got two postcards: one from Slovenia and one from Belgium.

The card from Slovenia shows various views of the Upper Carniola Region. The Upper Carniola Region is a traditional region in northwest Slovenia. It is home to many mountains and a popular destination for tourists. Parts of the Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park, and the Bled Island, Slovenia's only real island, are located in the region.

The stamp shows Anton Koželj's postcard number 97 in the War in Pictures series. During World War I postcards were used as element of propaganda to strengthen patriotic feelings. War in Pictures was a series of Slovene postcards printed during the war, which often included lines from Slovene poets and various national motifs.
Svetozar Boroević von Bojna, the left man on the card, was an Austro-Hungarian field marshal. He was in charge during the Isonzo Battles and the Battle of the Piave River and is said to have been one of the finest defensive strategists of World War I.

The card from Slovenia shows the Saint John the Baptist's Church in Ribčev Laz. Ribčev Laz is a settlement on Lake Bohinj.

Slovenia: Praetorian Palace in Koper

On Wednesday I got five postcards: one from Slovenia, one from Germany, one from Madeira, one from South Korea and one from China.

The card from Slovenia shows the Praetorian Palace in Koper. Koper is located on Slovenia's coastline, which is only 47km long. The port of Koper is the most important of the country.

100 years Russian Chapel below Vršič (issued 27-05-2016)
It is a joint issue with Russia.
During World War I approximately 12000 Russians were transported by the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the Vršič pass as Prisoners of War. Their task was the building of a road over the pass so that the reaching of the new front line in the Isonzo Valley would become easier. The new front line developed after Italy declared the war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1915. Several thousand young Russian prisoners died building this road. The prisoners also built the wooden Russian Chapel below Vršič.

Slovenia: Savica Waterfall

Yesterday I got three postcards: one from Slovenia, one from the USA and one from Italy.

The card from Slovenia shows the Savica Waterfall. The Savica Waterfall is a waterfall in the Triglav National Park. France Prešeren wrote a poem about the waterfall and in 1807 it was visited by Archduke John of Austria.

Slovenia: Triglav National Park

On Thursday I got four postcards: one from Slovenia, two from Malaysia and one from Norway.

The card from Slovenia shows the Triglav National Park. The Triglav National Park was established in 1981. It is located in the Julian Alps and is the only national park in Slovenia. The Triglav, the highest mountain of Slovenia, is located within the park.

Slovenia: Lipica

On Wednesday I got four postcards: one from Slovenia, one from Germany, one from Malaysia and one from India.

The card from Slovenia shows Lipizzaner at the stud farm in Lipica. The Lipizzaner is a breed of horse originating from Slovenia. It was developed by the Hapsburg nobility in the 16th century. The first stud farms were in Lipica. The breed is used in the Spanish Riding School of Vienna.

Slovenia: Proteus

On Wednesday I got three postcards: one from Slovenia, one from Belarus and one from Singapore.

The card from Slovenia shows a Proteus at the Postojna Cave. The Proteus is an aquatic salamander and the only cave-dwelling chordate species found in Europe. It is endemic to the waters that flow underground through extensive limestone of karst of Central and Southeastern Europe. It is completely adapted to a life of total darkness and the largest troglodytic amphibian in the World.

Slovenia: Šentrupert

On Thursday I got eight postcards: one from Slovenia, one from Japan, one from Taiwan, three from Germany, one from Spain and one from Norway.

The card from Slovenia shows Šentrupert. Šentrupert is a village in southeastern Slovenia. 

The card was sent with a EUROPA stamp and Slovenia's new Postcrossing stamp with First Day Special Postmark, but the Postcrossing stamp got lost and only the EUROPA stamp (from set of two) (issued 29-05-2015) and a part of the special Postcrossing postmark remained. :(
