Bosnia and Herzegovina: Latin Bridge in Sarajevo

On Saturday I got two postcards: one from Bosnia and Herzegovina and one from the Netherlands.

The card from Bosnia and Herzegovina shows the Latin Bridge in Sarajevo. The Latin Bridge is an Ottoman stone bridge and the oldest preserved bridge in Sarajevo. In 1914 Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife at the northern end of the bridge. This was the immediate cause for the beginning of World War I. During the Yugoslav era the bridge was known as Princip's Bridge.

Usually I do not collect postcards which are not sent from the country of origin, but this card is such a great addition for my World War I collection that I can not complain. ^___^

Thank You very much Marcel!

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Old Bridge of Mostar

On Tuesday I got two postcards: one from Bosnia and Herzegovina and one from Japan.

The card from Bosnia and Herzegovina shows the Stari Most in Mostar. The Stari Most is a bridge crossing the Neretva River. It was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557 and was finished nine years later. It was built by a student of Mimar Sinan and is considered an exemplary piece of Balkan Islamic architecture. For more than 400 years it was a symbol of the connection between East and West, but in 1993 it was destroyed by Croat troops during the Croat–Bosniak War. It was rebuilt between 2001 and 2004 and is today one of the most famous sights of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 2005 is the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Sarajevo

Today I got two postcards from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One of them shows a panoramic view of Sarajevo. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On 28th June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of Young Bosnia. The assassination caused World War I, which began one month later. In 1984 the city hosted the Olympic Winter Games and between 1992 and 1996 Sarajevo suffered the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad

Today I got two postcards from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One of them shows the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad. The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge was built in the late 16th century by Mimar Sinan at the behest of Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović. It is a representative masterpiece of Sinan and the Ottoman monumental architecture. Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić wrote about the bridge in The Bridge on the Drina. Since 2007 is the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
