India: Jantar Mantar in Jaipur

On 7th January I got a postcard from India.

It shows the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur. The Jantar Mantar are astronomical observation sites constructed at the behest of Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the early 18th century. In total five were constructed in New Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi, of which the one in Jaipur is the largest and best preserved. It includes 19 main fixed instruments designed for the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye and is the monumental embodiment of the coming together of needs which are at the same time political, scientific and religious. Since 2010 is the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Three stamps were used on the card. The pair of stamps about the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (issued 24-10-2020) unfortunately remained uncancelled, while the definitive about former Prime Minister Atal Vajpayee (issued 25-12-2018) from the Creators of India series was cancelled.

India: Victoria Memorial in Kolkata

On 11th December I got a postcard from India.

It shows the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. The Victoria Memorial was built between 1906 and 1921. Kolkata was until 1911 the capital of the British Raj. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria and is now a museum and tourist destination. The design is in the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style which uses a mixture of British and Mughal elements with Venetian, Egyptian, Deccani and Islamic architectural influences.


The stamp got lost during the journey.

India: Rajabai Clock Tower in Mumbai

On 8th November I got three postcards: one from India, one from Japan and one from Belgium.

The card from India shows the Rajabai Clock Tower in Mumbai. The Rajabai Clock Tower was built between 1869 and 1878. It was designed by the English architect Sir George Gilbert Scott in a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles and is part of the campus of the University of Mumbai. As part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai is the Rajabai Clock Tower since 2018 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Wellington Railway Station at the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

On 28th September I got two postcards: one from India and one from Germany.

The card from India shows the Wellington Railway Station at the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British until 1908 and is located in Tamil Nadu. It is an narrow gauge rack railway. The railway has the steepest track in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%. As one of the Mountain Railways of India is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway since 2005 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The two other inscribed railways are the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway inscribed in 1999 and the Kalka-Shimla Railway inscribed in 2008.

India: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai

Last Saturday I got a postcard from India.

It shows the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was built between 1878 and 1888 in a mixture of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian architecture, which makes it an outstanding example of the meeting of two cultures. Today it is one of the busiest train stations in the World. Since 2004 is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was known as Victoria Terminus until 1996, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Ahmadabad

On Saturday I got a postcard from India.

It shows the entrance of the Bhadra Fort in the Historic City of Ahmadabad, the walled city of Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad was founded in the 15th century as capital of the Gujarat Sultanate. It is known for its densely-packed traditional houses with characteristic features such as bird feeders, public wells and religious institutions. Today it is the fifth largest city of India and largest city of Gujarat, but lost the status of Gujarat's capital to Gandhinagar. The Historic City of Ahmadabad is since 2017 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Atlas Moth

On Monday I got a postcard from India.

It shows an Atlas Moth. The Atlas Moth is found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, Southern China and India. It is one of the largest moths in the World. In India Atlas Moths are cultivated in a non-commercial capacity for their silk, which is said to have greater durability than normal silk.

India: Qutb Complex in Delhi

On Thursday I got three postcards: one from India, one from the UK and one from Spain.

The card from India shows the Qutb Complex in Delhi. The Qutb Complex is an array of monuments and buildings started in the 12th century. The most famous monument in the complex is the Qutb Minar (3), the tallest brick minaret in the World. The Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque (1) is the oldest mosque in northern India and the Alai Darwaza (4) is a masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art. The Qutb Minar and the other monuments in the complex are since 1993 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On Thursday I got two covers including one from India.

Inside were three Indian postcards.

The first one shows the Mount Khangchendzonga in the Indian State of Sikkim. Mount Khangchendzonga is the third highest mountain on Earth. It is associated with many mythological stories. In 1977 the Khangchendzonga National Park was established, which today covers 25% of Sikkim. Last month the Khangchendzonga National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The second one shows a group of Himalayan Tahrs in the Great Himalayan National Park. The Great Himalayan National Park was established in 1984. It is characterised by high alpine peaks, alpine meadows and riverine forests. As part of the Himalaya biodiversity hotspot it is home to more than 375 species of animals. Since 2014 is the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area on the UNESCO World Heritage List.


The last one shows the giant open-air rock relief Descent of the Ganges in Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram was a port city founded by the Pallava Kings. Since 1984 is the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Sundarbans National Park

On 4th August I got four postcards: one from India, one from Finland and two from Austria.

The card from India shows a Tiger in the Sundarbans National Park. The Sundarbans are located in Bangladesh and India. They are the largest mangrove forest in the World and are known for their biodiversity. The Sundarbans National Park in India was established in 1984. It is one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger. The Sundarbans National Park is since 1987 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, while the Sundarbans in Bangladesh were added in 1997.

India: Keoladeo National Park

The last week I was in Austria and during that time arrived eleven postcards including one from India.

It shows two Sarus Cranes in the Keoladeo National Park. The Keoladeo National Park was established in 1982. Every year it becomes the wintering area for thousands of migratory waterfowl from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China and Siberia. The Sarus Crane is just one of more than 350 bird species recorded in the park. The Keoladeo National Park is since 1985 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The First Gorkha Rifles was founded in 1815. At the beginning of World War I it was moved to the Western Front, but because the soldiers were not used to the cold winter they were moved to Mesopotamia in late 1915 to fight against the Ottoman Empire.

India: Valley of Flowers National Park

Today I got two postcards: one from India and one from Germany.

The card from India shows the Valley of Flowers National Park. The Valley of Flowers National Park is a national park in the Indian State of Uttarakhand. It was established in 1982. It is known for its meadows of endemic flowers and as home of endangered animals. The Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Parks are since 1988 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Periyar National Park in the Western Ghats

Today I got five postcards: one from India, one from France, two from Germany and one from India

The card from India shows a group of elephants at the Periyar National Park in the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats are a mountain chain along the western side of India. It is one of the best examples of the monsoon system in the World and is considered to be one of the World’s "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity. The Periyar National Park was established in 1982. It is known for its elephants and tigers. The Western Ghats are since 2012 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On 8th October I got not only nine postcards but also two covers including one from India.

Inside were four Indian postcards.
The first card shows the Akshardham in New Delhi. New Delhi is the capital of India and of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It was established in 1911 and became India's capital in 1931. The Akshardham is a Hindu temple with exhibitions about Hindu and Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture. It was opened in 2005 and is one of the largest Hindu temples in the World.


The second card shows a Bengal Florican. The Bengal Florican is a critically endangered bustard species native to Cambodia, India and Vietnam. It is said that only 1500 individuals are alive.


Another card shows a Golden Langur at the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary. The Golden Langur is a monkey species. It lives in a small territory in the border region of Bhutan and India and is listed as endangered. It was first mentioned in the Western World in the 1950s. The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is a national park in the Indian State of Assam known of its variety of wildlife. It is since 1985 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.


The last card shows the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka. The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka are paintings from Mesolithic Period. They are on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007.

On Wednesday I got four postcards: one from India, one from Slovenia, one from Germany and one from Malaysia.

The card from India shows an Indian Rhinoceros at the Kaziranga National Park. The Kaziranga National Park was established as reserve forest in 1905. It is home to two-third of the World's Indian Rhinoceroses. The Kaziranga National park is since 1985 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa

Last Saturday arrived two postcards: one from India and one from Germany.

The card from India shows the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa. The Basilica of Bom Jesus was built when the region was part of the Portuguese Indies. It contains the tomb of St Francis Xavier. The basilica and other monuments in the region illustrate the evangelization of Asia and had an influence on the architecture of missions in Asia. The Churches and Convents of Goa are since 1986 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

India: Government Museum in Chennai

Today I got four postcards: one from India, one from Canada, one from France and one from the United Kingdom.

The card from India shows an exhibit from the Bronze Gallery of the Government Museum in Chennai. Chennai is the capital of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu and the sixth largest city of India. It is one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for 2015. The Government Museum was founded in 1851 and is thus the second oldest museum in India. It has rich collections of archaeological and numismatic artifacts and the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe.

India: Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Yesterday I got two postcards: one from India and one from Indonesia.

The card from India shows the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built from 1891 to 1908 and is located in Tamil Nadu. It goes from an evaluation of 326m up to 2203m. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was added as extension on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.
