Germany: Wieskirche

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the interior and exterior of the Wieskirche in Steingaden. The Wieskirche is a work of Dominikus Zimmermann and was built between 1745 and 1754. It is a masterpiece of the Bavarian Rococo. Since 1983 is the Pilgrimage Church of Wies an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Germany: Deutsches Museum

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Deutsches Museum in Munich. The Deutsches Museum was founded in 1903 and is today the biggest museum of science and technology in the World. The museum shows 28000 exhibits from 50 fields of science and technology.

Germany: Viktualienmarkt in Munich

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Viktualienmarkt in Munich. The Viktualienmarkt is a daily food market and developed to a popular market for gourmets.

Germany: Rathaus-Glockenspiel of Munich

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Rathaus-Glockenspiel of the New Town Hall at the Marienplatz in Munich. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel dates back to 1908 and chimes everyday at 11, 12 and 17 o'clock. It reenact the stories of the marriage of the Duke Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine and of the Schäfflertanz.

Germany: Marienplatz in Munich

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Marienplatz with the New Town Hall in Munich. The Marienplatz is the main square of Munich. The New Town Hall was built between 1867 and 1908. It houses the city council. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel is also a famous tourist attraction.

Germany: Allianz Arena

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Allianz Arena in Munich. The Allianz Arena is the home of the football teams FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 München. In the Allianz Arena there is enough space for more than 70000 spectators. In 2006 it was a venue of the World Football Championship.

Germany: Maximilianeum

On 16th August arrived the 14 cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Bavaria.

One of the cards shows the Maximilianeum in Munich. The Maximilianeum was built as home for a gifted students' foundation and since 1949 it also houses the Bavarian Landtag.

Slovakia: Domica Cave

On 15th August arrived six postcards: one from Slovakia, one from New Zealand, two from Germany, one from Spain and one from Malaysia.

The card from Slovakia shows the Domica cave. The Domica cave was found in 1926 and since 1932 are 1600m of the 5140m open to the public. Since 1995 it is as one of the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Malaysia: Pinnacles of Mount Api

On 15th August arrived six postcards: one from Malaysia, one from Slovakia, one from New Zealand, two from Germany and one from Spain.

The card from Malaysia shows the limestone pinnacles of Mount Api in the Gunung Mulu National Park. The Gunung Mulu National Park is the most studied tropical karst area in the world. Since 2000 is the Gunung Mulu National Park an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spain: Alhambra

On 15th August arrived six postcards: one from Spain, one from Malaysia, one from Slovakia, one from New Zealand and two from Germany.

The card from Spain shows the Alhambra in Granada. It was built in the 9th century. It is one of the best examples of Moorish architecture in Spain and one of Europe's most visited sights. Since 1984 is the Alhambra together with the Generalife and the Albayzín an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Germany: Nie wieder Krieg!

On 15th August arrived six postcards: two from Germany, one from Spain, one from Malaysia, one from Slovakia and one from New Zealand.

One of the cards from Germany shows the poster "Nie wieder Krieg!" by Käthe Kollwitz. She created it for the 10th anniversary of the World War I in 1924. With the poster she vents the grief about the death of her son in World War I.

I got this card a few weeks ago in an envelope.

Germany: europeana.eu

On 15th August arrived six postcards: two from Germany, one from Spain, one from Malaysia, one from Slovakia and one from New Zealand.

One of the cards from Germany is an Ad-card for the website www.europeana1914-1918.eu.On this website you can find documents of the World War I from libraries and private collections.

I got this card a few weeks ago in an envelope.

After the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria the German Empire assures the Austro-Hungarian Empire of succour for a war against Serbia and what will come then. The German Empire entered the war on 1st August 1914 with the declaration of war against Russia (protecting power of the Balkans). Short after the German Empire captured Luxembourg and Belgium to capture France and was thus in war with France and Great Britain (guarantor power of Belgium). The German Empire was one of the main belligerent of the World War I. The German Empire lost all its colonies during the war and after the lost war it had to sign the Treaty of Versailles.

New Zealand: Museum of Wellington City and Sea

This is the 400th post on my blog! Thank You all of you for sending me all this nice postcards and covers with so many nice stamps!

On 15th August arrived six postcards: one from New Zealand, two from Germany, one from Spain, one from Malaysia and one from Slovakia.

The card from New Zealand shows the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. The Museum of Wellington City and Sea is a museum about the history of Wellington. It was founded in 1972 as maritime museum. Since 1989 it also houses other exhibitions on the history of Wellington. It was recently voted as one of the World's top 50 museums by The Times.

New Zealand entered the World War I on 5th August 1914 alongside the Triple Entente. New Zealand sent nearly 100000 of its 1000000 civics to the war. Of this nearly 18500 did not come back. One of the New Zealandian left to the war was Melville Mirfin. He was a bank clerk from the South Island and signed up short after the proclamation. Melville Mirfin was one of the 1385 men having gone to Samoa to capture it as New Zealand's first duty in World War I from the Germans.

Germany: New Synagogue in Berlin

On 8th August arrived the four cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Berlin.

One of the cards shows the New Synagogue. It was built between 1859 and 1866 as main synagogue of the Berlin Jewish community. It survived the Kristallnacht but was damaged in the World War II. From 1988 to 1993 it was rebuilt. When you enter it you have to go through a metal detector like the ones at an airport.

Germany: Museum Island

On 8th August arrived the four cards I sent to myself when I recently visited Berlin.

One of the cards shows the Lustgarten, the Berlin Cathedral and the Old Museum on the Museum Island. The other museums on the Museum Island are the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. Since 1999 is the Museum Island an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
