Italy: Sanremo

On Thursday I got thirteen postcards including two from Italy.

One of the Italian cards shows Sanremo. Sanremo is a city on the Mediterranean coast near the French border. It hosts the Sanremo Music Festival and the Milan–San Remo cycling classic. It is also home to the headquarters of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law.

Switzerland: Zytglogge in Bern

On Wednesday I got five postcards from Switzerland.

One of them shows the Zytglogge in Bern. Bern is the capital of the Swiss Canton of Bern and as Federal City also capital of Switzerland. It is also the fourth largest city of Switzerland. The Zytglogge is a medieval tower in Bern's Old City. It was built in the 13th century and was used as guard tower, prison and clock tower. In the 15th century an astronomical clock was added to the tower. It is one of Bern's most famous sights. The Old City of Bern is since 1983 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Switzerland: La Chaux-de-Fonds

On Wednesday I got five postcards from Switzerland.

One of them shows an aerial view of La Chaux-de-Fonds. La Chaux-de-Fonds is a city in the Swiss Canton of Neuchâtel and the third largest city of the Romandie. It is one of the most important watch making towns in Switzerland and owed its existence to this single industry. The city was completely destroyed by a fire in 1794 and was later rebuilt using a grid street system. Karl Marx described it as “huge factory-town” in Das Kapital. Since 2009 is La Chaux-de-Fonds together with Le Locle, another example of Watchmaking Town Planning, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Switzerland: Basel Town Hall

On Wednesday I got five postcards from Switzerland.

One of them shows the Basel Town Hall in the Swiss Canton of Basel-Stadt. Basel is the third largest city in Switzerland and an important centre of culture. It is located near the meeting point of the French, German and Swiss borders. The Basel Town Hall houses the Cantonal Government.

Switzerland: Saint-Saphorin in the Lavaux

On Wednesday I got five postcards from Switzerland.

One of them shows Saint-Saphorin in the Lavaux in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. The Lavaux is known for its vineyard terraces, which can be traced back to the 11th century. The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces are since 2007 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

One of them shows the Chillon Castle in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. The Chillon Castle is an island castle located on Lake Geneva. It is one of the most visited castles in Europe.

San Marino: Palazzo Pubblico

On Tuesday I got five postcards from San Marino.

One of them shows the Palazzo Pubblico. The Palazzo Pubblico is the town hall of the City of San Marino and also the seat of the Republic's main institutional and administrative bodies. The building in its current form was built between 1884 and 1894.

San Marino: Second and Third Tower

On Tuesday I got five postcards from San Marino.

One of them shows the Second and Third Tower, the Cesta and Montale. The Second Tower was built in the 13th century on the highest peak of Monte Titano. Today it houses a museum about Saint Marinus. The Third Tower was built in the 14th century on the smallest peak of Titano. It is the smallest of the three towers and completed the Sanmarinese defence system. It is not open to the public.

San Marino: First Tower

On Tuesday I got five postcards from San Marino.

One of them shows the First Tower, the Guaita. The First Tower is the oldest and most famous of the Three Towers of San Marino. It was built in the 11th century and was rebuilt to its current form in the 15th century, after it was rebuilt various times. It was considered as impenetrable.

San Marino: City of San Marino

On Tuesday I got five postcards from San Marino.

One of them shows various views of the City of San Marino. The City of San Marino is the capital city of San Marino and its third largest city. It was founded by Saint Marinus and other Christian refugees in 301. Today is the City of San Marino an important centre of the tourism with around 3million visits per year. The San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano are since 2008 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

One of them shows the Three Towers of San Marino. The Three Towers are a group of towers. They are located on the three peaks of Monte Titano. The towers are shown on San Marino's national flag and coat of arms.

Germany: History of Bremen

Yesterday I got four postcards: two from Germany and two from Italy.

One of the cards from Germany is the Chronicle card of Bremen. Bremen was mentioned for the first time in 782 and in 787 it became a bishop's see. In the 11th century was Bremen known as Rome of the North. The city joined the Hanseatic League in 1358 and got the imperial immediacy in 1646. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 the city became a free city within the German Confederation. In 1867 Prussia got the military sovereignty over Bremen and in 1871 Bremen became a State of the German Empire. Today is Bremen the capital of the German State of Bremen.
