France: Lyon

On 15th October I got two postcards: one from France and one from Germany.

The card from France shows various views of Lyon. Lyon is a city in the Rhône-Alpes region and the third largest city of France. Once it was an important production site of silk and today it is known for its gastronomy. In 1892 Auguste and Louis Lumière invented their cinematographe in Lyon. Lyon also houses the headquarters of Interpol and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The Historic Site of Lyons is since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Germany: German Unity

On 15th October I got two postcards: one from Germany and one from France.

The card from Germany shows various places in all parts of the country. This year Germany celebrates 25 years of German Unity, as the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany 25 years ago. I bought this card in my hometown and used it to get a special postmark about the German Unity.

Belarus: Brest Fortress

On 14th October I got five postcards: one from Belarus, two from Singapore, one from Finland and one from Germany.

The card from Belarus shows the Brest Fortress in Brest. Brest is a city near the Polish border and the sixth largest city of Belarus. On 3rd March 1918 the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed in Brest.
The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was a separate peace between the new Bolshevik government of Russia and the Central Powers during World War I. Through the treaty Russia passed various territories to the German and Ottoman Empires and recognised the independence of Ukraine. The combat operations already ended in December 1917 and with the treaty World War I in Eastern Europe was finally over. 
The Brest Fortress was attacked by German forces at the beginning of the German-Soviet War in 1941. Today it houses a museum and is one of the most visited sights of Belarus.

Germany: Brandenburg Gate and German Unity

On 14th October I got five postcards: one from Germany, one from Belarus, two from Singapore and one from Finland.

The card from Germany shows the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
I bought this card when I visited Berlin earlier this year.

Finland: Moomin sent on World Post Day

On 14th October I got five postcards: one from Finland, one from Germany, one from Belarus and two from Singapore.

The card from Finland shows an illustration from "The Exploits of Moominpappa".


On World Post Day 54 different stamps and special postmarks were issued in 54 cities all over Finland. The stamps show local sights and landmarks. The stamp and postmark on this card are from Lahti. The stamps shows the Mustakallio chapel.

Singapore: Botanic Gardens

On 14th October I got five postcards: two from Singapore, one from Finland, one from Germany and one from Belarus.

One of the cards from Singapore was printed by the Botanic Gardens and shows a Vanda Miss Joaquim.

Singapore: Old Supreme Court Building

On 14th October I got five postcards: two from Singapore, one from Finland, one from Germany and one from Belarus.

One of the cards from Singapore shows the Old Supreme Court Building. The Old Supreme Court Building was built between 1937 and 1939. It housed Singapore's Supreme Court until 2005. It is planned to house a arts and cultural centre in the building in future.

Czech Republic: Pelhřimov

On 13th October I got a postcard from the Czech Republic.

It shows Pelhřimov. Pelhřimov is a town in Southern Bohemia in the westernmost tip of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. It is known for its old town and as filming spot of the Czechoslovak TV series "Návštěvníci", "The Visitors".


The card was sent from the Postcrossing Meet-up in Pelhřimov.

Belarus: Struve Geodetic Arc

On 9th October I got three postcards: one from Belarus and two from Germany.

The card from Belarus shows a map of the Struve Geodetic Arc, Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve and a Belarusian point of the arc within a map of Belarus. The Struve Geodetic Arc runs from the Black Sea to the northern coast of Norway. It was built on the initiative of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve between 1810 and 1865 and should measure the size and the shape of the earth. The Arc is 2820 km long and is a exceptional example for the cooperation of scientists and monarchs of different countries for a scientific aim. Since 2005 is the Struve Geodetic Arc a transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site in Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine.

Singapore: Singlish

On 8th October I got nine postcards: two from Singapore, one from Japan, four from Germany and two from Slovenia.

One of the cards from Singapore shows various Singlish phrases. Singlish is a creole language spoken in Singapore. Its words mainly originate from English, Malay, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and Tamil. The government and the upper-class of Singapore discourage the use of Singlish.
