France: Montpellier Cathedral

On Thursday I got two postcards: one from France and one from Australia.

The card from France shows the Montpellier Cathedral. The Montpellier Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church. It is the seat of the Archbishops of Montpellier and since 1847 it is a Basilica minor.

Italy: Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento

On Wednesday I got a postcard from Italy.

It shows the setting up of the Italian Flag on the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento in 1918. The card was printed in 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Trento. Trento was hard fought during World War I. It was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, although it had a large Italian population. After the war it became a part of Italy and remained it until today. Today is Trento the capital of autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol.

Francesco Baracca was an Italian aviation ace and one of the most succesful Italian fighter pilots of World War I. He was involved in 63 aerial combats and shot down 34 enemy airplanes. He was later shot down by Austrian rifle fire.

Germany: Grömitz

On Tuesday I got two postcards: one from Germany and one from Finland.

The card from Germany shows various views of Grömitz. Grömitz is a sea resort on the Baltic Sea in the German State of Schleswig-Holstein. It is one of the oldest sea resort on the Baltic Sea and the third most important holiday resort in Schleswig-Holstein. 
My mum sent this card to me on her recent trip to Grömitz.

Brazil: Salvador de Bahia

On Monday I got three postcards: one from Brazil, one from Taiwan and one from Germany.

The card from Brazil shows the coloured houses of Salvador. Salvador was founded in 1549 and became the first capital of Brazil. It is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas and was also the first slave market in the New World. It remained the capital of Brazil until 1763. Today is Salvador the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia and the third largest city of Brazil. The Historic Centre of Salvador de Bahia is since 1985 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Germany: Erfurt Synagogue

On Monday I got three postcards: one from Germany, one from Brazil and one from Taiwan.

The card from Germany shows the Erfurt Synagogue. The Erfurt Synagogue was completed in 1094 and is thus the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe. It was the centre of the Jewish community in Erfurt. In the 13th century a Mikveh was built for the synagogue, which was just rediscovered in 2007. After a devastating pogrom in 1349 the Erfurt Synagogue was used as warehouse and later as restaurant. In 1998 the Erfurt Treasure, one of the most extensive and best-preserved treasures of the European Middle Ages, was found near the synagogue and since 2009 it is shown in the synagogue. The Old Synagogue and Mikveh in Erfurt seek for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Update: Since 2023 is the Jewish-Medieval Heritage of Erfurt on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Brazil: Amazon River

On Saturday I got two cards: one from Brazil and one from Malaysia.

The card from Brazil shows a view of the Amazon River. The Amazon River is one of the largest rivers in the World and the Amazon region is one of the richest regions in terms of biodiversity in the World. The Central Amazon Conservation Complex is since 2000 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Malaysia: Borneo Pygmy Elephants

On Saturday I got two cards: one from Malaysia and one from Brazil.

The card from Malaysia shows a group of Borneo Pygmy Elephants. The Borneo Pygmy Elephants inhabit the northeastern part of Borneo. There is an ongoing debate whether the Borneo Pygmy Elephant has to be counted as subspecies of the Asian Elephant or not. It is endangered.

Macedonia: Ohrid Region

On Thursday I got four postcards: one from Macedonia, one from Russia and two from the USA.

The card from Macedonia shows various views of the Ohrid region. Lake Ohrid is a lake located on the Albanian-Macedonian border. It is the largest lake of Macedonia and one of the oldest and deepest lakes of Europe. Ohrid is the largest town on the lake. It is also the eight-largest city of Macedonia and an important centre of tourism. An important building in the region is the Saint Panteleimon (upper right corner), the oldest Slav monastery. The Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region is since 1979 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

USA: Giant Pandas at Zoo Atlanta

On Thursday I got four postcards: two from the USA, one from Macedonia and one from Russia.

One of the cards from the USA shows Giant Pandas at the Zoo Atlanta in the State of Georgia. The Zoo Atlanta was opened in 1889. In 1999 the first Giant Pandas, Lun Lun (female) and Yang Yang (male), arrived in the zoo as loan from China. In 2006, 2008 and 2010 Giant Panda cubs were born in the zoo. In 2014 twin pandas were born in the zoo. They are called Mei Lun and Mei Huan and are both female.

USA: Mesa Verda National Park

On Thursday I got four postcards: two from the USA, one from Macedonia and one from Russia.

One of the cards from the USA shows the Cliff Palace in the Mesa Verda National Park in the State of Colorado. The Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 and is known for its ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings. The Mesa Verde National Park is since 1978 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
