2022 Christmas Mail from Austria

Austria: Steinhendl

On 28th March I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows a Steinhendl. The Steinhendl is a breed of chicken. It is small, tough, agile, very active, does not need much attention and is known for its colourful feathers. Although being common until the 1970s, it is now mainly held in captive breeding.

A wonderful matching stamp (issued 25-03-2022) was used here. It is the second stamp in the series about rare breeds that started last year with the Jochberger Hummel.

Thank You very much Anita!

Austria: Christkindl

On 24th December I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows an illustration of Christkindl. Christkindl is a village in the Austrian State of Upper Austria. It is known for its pilgrimage church and Christmas post office, which answers the letters of children since 1950. Every year it processes nearly 2million letters.

I have already got a few cards sent with special postmarks from Christkindl, but this is the first time that I got a "Über Postamt Christkindl" (Via post office Christkindl) label. If affixed to a piece of mail it is sent first to Christkindl and then forwarded to the address on the mail. They can be bought directly from the Austrian mail for the prize of a national letter and a new one is issued every year. This is the version of 2020. The stamp used here celebrates the Birth Centenary of Reinhold Stecher (issued 19-11-2021). Reinhold Stecher was Bishop of Innsbruck, artist and stamp collector.

Thank You very much Anna!

Austria: Saint Nicholas

MerrChristmas to Everyone!

On 8th December I got four postcards: three from Austria and one from Germany.

One of the cards from Austria shows a nostalgic illustration of Saint Nicholas by Tausendschön.

A matching personalised stamp was used as well as two different Saint Nicholas postmarks from Pram and Strudengau.

Thank You very much Anita and Merry Christmas to you as well!

Austria: Boletus edulis

On 30th August I got two postcards from Austria.

One of them shows Boletus edulis. Boletus edulis is a basidiomycete fungus and widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere across Europa, Asia and North America. It is one of the most popular edible mushrooms. Wikipedia lists Cep, Penny Bun, Porcino and Porcini as common English names. In German we simply call them Steinpilze (stone mushrooms).

After the Chanterelles last year, this is the second stamp in the series about Austrian mushrooms. It was issued on 27th August 2021. I like these stamps.

Thank You very much Anita!

Austria: Wolf

On 12th May I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows a Wolf. The Wolf is a large canine native to Eurasia and North America. It is the ancestor of most domestic dog breeds, but unlike the human's best friend they were feared and hunted since at least the Middle Ages, although attacks on humans are rare. In the 19th century the Wolf was wiped out from many of its former habitats that were near human settlements, but luckily since the 21st century the animals return.

In Austria the Wolf was exterminated by 1882, but since 2009 some animals immigrated from Eastern Europa. Today there are approximately 30 animals in Austria, which mainly live in the state of Lower Austria. The Wolf was chosen for this year's Austrian EUROPA stamp about Endangered Animals. Issued on 8th May the stamp was used on this card together with its First Day Special Postmark. Although there is nothing really special about the stamp in terms of printing, it looks impressive. Probably its because of the animal's majesty and its piercing look.

Thank You very much Anita!

Austria: Books and Flowers

On 6th March I got a postcard from Austria.

It shows books and flowers.

The stamp is from a set of three about ball sports (issued 02-10-2020). It was clearly cancelled in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.

Thank You very much Anna!
