cover from Germany

On Thursday I got not only a postcard but also a cover from Germany.

Inside were five postcards.

Two of them are from the Latvian Museum of National History. The Latvian Museum of National History was founded in Riga in 1869. It is the largest repository of Latvian material culture


The third card shows the Historical Museum of Łódź. Łódź is the third largest city of Poland and was once one of the most multicultural and industrial cities in Europe. The Historical Museum was opened in 1975 in the former residence of the manufacturer Izrael Kalmanowicz Poznański. It presents exhibits about the history of Łódź.


The fourth card shows Vessra Abbey. Vessra Abbey was founded in the 12th century and was turned into an agricultural estate after the Reformation. In 1975 it became home to the Museum of the History of Agriculture of the DDR and since 1990 it houses the Hennebergische Museum.


The last one shows the Silver Gallery in Geising. The Silver Gallery of Geising was operated for the first time in 1687. In 1960 it was opened as mining museum, but was closed in 1995.

cover from Spain

On Tuesday I got not only two postcards but also a cover from Spain.

Inside was a postcard from Latvia.

The card shows an Edible Dormouse. The Edible Dormouse is a large dormouse native to big parts of Europe. It goes into hibernation from October to May. For the Romans it was a delicacy.
The card is a maxicard. The stamp is from a set of four WWF stamps and was issued on 19th November 1994.

Latvia: Doll

On Tuesday I got three postcards: one from Latvia and two from Austria.

The card from Latvia shows a doll wearing the dress of Semigallia. The doll is from a collection of Latvian national dolls produced by Latvju Lietas, a workshop in Riga. There are different dolls in the collection with various dresses and of many sizes. They are made by hand with eco-friendly materials.

Latvia: Latvian Academy of Sciences

Today I got a postcard from Latvia.

It shows the Latvian Academy of Sciences in Riga. The Latvian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1946 when Latvia was a part of the Soviet Union. Its building was constructed between 1953 and 1956 as Latvia's first skyscraper. Today the foremost scientists of the country are members of the academy.

Latvia: Riga

Today I got seven postcards: my first card from Latvia, two from Germany, one from the Czech Republic, one from Japan and two from Sweden.

Latvia is one of the Baltic states bordering on Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. Latvia is a member of the UN, the EU and the NATO.

The card shows the Blackheads House in Latvia's capital Riga during Christmas. In front of the Blackheads House the first Christmas tree of the World was arranged. The Historic Centre of Riga of which the Blackheads House is a part is since 1997 an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
