South Africa: Nelson Mandela

Last Thursday I got a postcard from South Africa.

It shows Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-Apartheid revolutionary and political leader. Before he was released by President Frederik Willem de Klerk in 1990, he had spent 27 years in prison. In 1994 he became South Africa's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election, which he stayed until 1999. Already in 1993 he and de Klerk got the Nobel Peace Prize. He is internationally known as a symbol of democracy and social justice. Nelson Mandela died in 2013.

With a great matching souvenir sheet:
Flora and Fauna (from set of thirty-three) (issued 01-11-2000)
100th birthday of Nelson Mandela (issued 18-07-2018)
It is a joint issue with Germany.

Also affixed to the card is an older stamp about Nelson Mandela that was issued for his inauguration on 10th May 1994.

Thank You very much Kyle!

South Africa: Big Five

Today I got a great postcard from South Africa.

The card shows the animals of the Big Five as babies. Big Five was a term used by big game hunters for the five animals lion, rhinoceros, leopard, buffalo and elephant. The term refers not to the seize but to the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved. Today it is also used for tourist safaris.

With a great variety of stamps:
