Dominican Republic: Columbus Lighthouse

On Monday I got three postcards: one from the Dominican Republic, one from Singapore and one from Thailand.

The card from the Dominican Republic shows the Columbus Lighthouse. The Columbus Lighthouse is a mausoleum, memorial and museum. It was built between 1986 and 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in America and houses what is said to be the remains of Columbus.

Stamps:

Dominican Republic: Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in Santo Domingo

On Saturday I got four postcards: my first card from the Dominican Republic, one from Germany and two from Estonia.

The Dominican Republic is a country on Hispaniola bordering on Haiti. It is the second-largest country and the most-visited destination in the Caribbean.

The card shows the Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in Santo Domingo. Santo Domingo was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496. It is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial rule in the New World. The Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor is America's first cathedral and also the continent's first hospital and university are located in the city. Santo Domingo is today the capital of the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean. The Colonial City of Santo Domingo is since 1990 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Stamps:
Centenary of the Province of Barahona (issued 23-11-2007)
50 years Dominican Postal Institute (from set of three) (issued 28-11-2013)
