Germany: Frankfurt am Main

On 18th November I got three postcards: two from Germany and one from France.

I had this card of Frankfurt lying around for some years and now had the perfect chance to use it, as you find here also the Saint Paul's Church, the centre of the Revolution of 1848.

I sent the card with this souvenir sheet about Robert Blum (issued 02-11-2021), one of the most famous German proponents of the Revolution of 1848. Although I do not like the design of this sheet very much, I think the theme is great.

Four Historic Postcards

In late June I ordered some historic postcards online, which arrived on 1st July.

The first card shows the Bismarck Monument in Hamburg. The Bismarck Monument was built between 1901 and 1906 and depicts Bismarck in the style of Roland, a knight with bare sword. Clearly visible from Hamburg's port, this is the largest German monument to the the first Chancellor of the German Empire and one of the city's landmark. For years I had been looking for a card of this monument, but the best one I could find only showed the head during the construction (see it here). Currently however the monument is renovated and there are plans to open a museum in the vault below, so hopefully there will soon be some more modern cards, but for the moment this one is great.

Another Bismarck is also shown on the second card. This one shows the Bismarck Memorial in Berlin, which was created between 1897 and 1901. This card is so old that shows the monument still in its original location in front of the Reichstag Building, but in 1938 it was moved together with monuments of Moltke and Roon and the Victory Column to its current location in the Tiergarten.

The third is also from Berlin and shows the Archenhold Observatory. Located in Treptow, this observatory is home to the Great Refractor, the longest pointable telescope in the World and the last remnant of the Great Industrial Exposition of 1896.

Last but not least I also bought this card of the Saint Peter's Church in Petersberg. The Saint Peter's Church is one of the oldest aboveground churches in Germany and was for some years the resting place of Saint Leoba. Together with the Saint Michael's Church in Fulda this church is currently nominated for the European Heritage Label as important site of the so-called Carolingian Renaissance.

Germany: Russian Chapel in Darmstadt

On 8th December I got two postcards: one from Germany and one from China.

The card from Germany shows the Russian Chapel in Darmstadt. The Russian Chapel in Darmstadt was built in a Russian revival style with gold Onion domes between 1897 and 1899. It was used as a private chapel by Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia, whose wife Alexandra was born in Darmstadt. This is my first Christmas card of the year. The picture shown here has to be some years old. The last time we had real snow here seems to have been ages ago. While last year it snowed once during December, so far we did not see any snow at all.

German Christmas stamps are always issued with a letter value, however this one from 2014 now has the right value for a postcard within Germany.

 Thank You very much Marcel!

Germany: Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt

On 26th September I got a postcard from Germany.

The card shows the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt. The Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt is one of the oldest and biggest museums in Germany. Beside art it shows exhibits about cultural and natural history. Important exhibits include fossils from the Messel Pit, one of the plaques from the Magdeburg Ivories and Pieter Brueghel the Elder's The Magpie on the Gallows.

The Covid-19 postmark from the mail sorting centre 60 was applied on the card. Again this is a longer version than usual, but I still do not know why it is longer. As postage the latest German lighthouse stamp was used.

Germany: Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt

On 17th March I got four postcards: three from Germany and one from the USA.

One of the cards from Germany shows the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt. The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1981 and opened to the public in 1991. It houses more than 4500 artworks ranging from the 1960s to the present day and giving an overview of the German and international art of this period. Between 1992 and 2002 the museum rearranged its exhibition every six months. This new exhibition model called the Change of Scene helped the new museum to gain international renown.

The card was signed during the Postcrossing Breakfast Club Meet-up in Frankfurt, one of the last meet-ups to take place in Germany before the measures against the coronavirus were adopted.

Germany: History of Frankfurt

On Tuesday I got five postcards: three from Germany, one from Italy and one from Estonia.

One of the cards from Germany is the Chronicle card of Frankfurt am Main. Although its history dates back to the Bronze Age, Frankfurt was just mentioned for the first time in 794 and in 1372 it became a Free Imperial City. In the meantime it developed into a centre of trade and even became the election place for the German Kings. Since the 16th century, when the title of German King and Holy Roman Emperor were more or less the same, the newly elected Emperor was also crowned in Frankfurt. In the 18th and 19th century it became the bank and exchange centre of Central Europa. Between 1810 and 1813 it was as Grand Duchy of Frankfurt a German satellite state of Napoleonic creation. After the Congress of Vienna until 1866 the Federal Assembly of the German Confederation met in Frankfurt, in 1866 the city became a part of Prussia. During the March Revolution of 1848/49 the Frankfurt Parliament, the first freely elected parliament for all of Germany, met at the Paulskirche (upper row centre). During World War II Frankfurt was destroyed. Today it is the largest city of the German State of Hesse and the seat of the European Central Bank.
