Lunar New Year Sheets from the Åland Islands

On Friday I got my stamp order from the Åland Islands.

From Åland I ordered the souvenir sheets about the Year of the Mouse (issued 24-10-2019), the Year of the Dog (issued 10-11-2017) and the Year of the Rooster (issued 11-11-2016).

Netherlands: Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

On 13th September I got four postcards: one from the Netherlands, one from Spain, one from Canada and one from Germany.

The card from the Netherlands shows the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a municipal museum about modern art, contemporary art and design. It was established in 1874.

My Stamp Order from Australia

Last Saturday I got my stamp order from Australia. Among the stamps I ordered were this year's Australian stamps about the Centenary of World War I (issued 02-10-2018). 

John Monash was an Australian civil engineer and military commander of the World War I. After having served in Egypt and Gallipoli, he became commander of the Australian Corps in May 1918. He was a meticulous planner and brilliant tactician and planned the Battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918, which expedited the end of the war. After the war he was knighted. John Monash died on 8th October 1931. He is considered to be one of the best Allied generals of the World War I and the most famous commander in Australian history.

After the Battle of Amiens the Entente saw a rapid series of victories against the German Empire, which became known as Hundred Days Offensive. This became the beginning of the end of the Western Front. 

On 11th November 1918 the Entente and the German Empire signed the Armistice of Compiègne. This armistice finally ended the war on the Western Front. The war was costly for Australia. Around 156000 Australians were wounded and 60000 died. Many of the fallen are interred in foreign soil. After the war Australia had another problem, as around 167000 troops had to be repatriated. Once again it was John Monash, whose brilliant leadership ensured that until early 1920 everyone came home.

Singapore: Year of the Dog

Last Wednesday I got four postcards: one from Singapore, one from Malaysia, one from Japan and one from Germany.

The card from Singapore shows an illustration of a dog. The card was turned into a maxicard with one of Singapore's Year of the Dog stamps. The stamp is from a set of three and was issued on 5th January 2018.

Slovenia: Karst Shepherd

On Thursday I got a postcard from Slovenia.

It shows a Karst Shepherd. The Karst Shepherd is a mountain dog from Slovenia. It is recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Between Tuesday and Thursday I was not at home and during that time I got three covers including one from Indonesia.

With nice stamps:

Asian Games (four from set of nine) (issued 18-01-2018)

Inside were three Indonesian postcards.

The first one is a written and stamped maxicard about the Year of the Dog. Indonesia's three stamps were issued on 1st February 2018.

The second one shows the Old Town of Semarang. Semarang is a city on Java. It is the capital and largest city of the province of Central Java and the fifth largest city of Indonesia. When Indonesia was a Dutch colony, it was an important port. Today the city is still famous for its many Dutch colonial buildings and seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The third one shows the Semanggi Interchange in Jakarta. The Semanggi Incerchange is a major road junction.

Philippines: Mount Pinatubo

On Wednesday I got two postcards from the Philippines.

One of them shows Mount Pinatubo. Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovulcano on the island of Luzon. Its eruptive history was unknown until it erupted in 1991. This eruption was one of the largest of the 20th century and more than 800 people died, although tens of thousands were evacuated before the eruption. The effects of the eruption were felt Worldwide.

Estonia: Freedom Square in Tallinn

Last Wednesday I got three postcards: one from Estonia, one from Russia and one from France.

The card from Estonia shows the Freedom Square in Tallinn. The Freedom Square is a public square which is dedicated to Estonia's independence. Its current form was laid out in 2009, but the most buildings are already older. The square is an important traffic hub and military parades and various concerts take place there.

Thailand: Maxicards

On Wednesday I got two maxicards from Thailand which were fixed together by tape.

The first maxicard was printed for the Year of the Dog. The stamp was issued on 1st January 2018.

The second maxicard was printed for the National Children's Day. The stamp is from a set of four and was issued on 13th January 2018.

Hong Kong: Year of the Dog

On Monday I got three postcards: two from Hong Kong and one from Hungary.

Both cards from Hong Kong are Year of the Dog maxicards. Hong Kong issued four Year of the Dog stamps and accompanying philatelic souvenirs on 27th January 2018. Two of the stamps and one of the Heartwarming stamps were used on the two maxicards with two different special postmarks.

Canada: Art Gallery of Ontario

On Wednesday I got three cards: one from Canada, one from Germany and one from China.

The card from Canada shows A. Y. Jackson's painting "Maple and Birches" from the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. The Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest and most important art museums in North America. It was opened in 1900 and beside other significiant collections it houses the largest collection of Canadian art in the World.

Taiwan: 7th Taiwan Postcrossing Meet-up
