My Trip to Innsbruck and Tyrol

In my summer holidays I spent a week in Austria. I made a day trip to Innsbruck and also visited other places in Tyrol.

Innsbruck is the capital and largest city of the Austrian State of Tyrol. It is also the fifth largest city of Austria. In 1964 and 1976 the city hosted the Winter Olympics and in 2012 the first Winter Youth Olympics took place there. The Old Town of Innsbruck seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the card I put a stamp of the Golden Roof and got it cancelled at the philatelic shop in Innsbruck.

The Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum was opened in 1823. It mainly shows artworks of Tyrolean origin, but also has an archaeological exhibition and shows foreign art donated by Tyrolean collectors.

 The Armoury was built between 1500 and 1505. Today it houses a branch of the Tyrolean State Museum.

The Imperial Palace of Innsbruck is a former Habsburg residence. Its construction started in the 15th century. Between 1754 and 1773 the palace was transformed and renovated in the Baroque style at the behest of Empress Maria Theresa. In 1765 the wedding of Maria Theresa's son was celebrated in Innsbruck and during the celebrations her husband, Francis I, died. Afterwards Maria Theresa decided to turn the Imperial Palace into a memorial site and representational building in honour of her husband. It is considered to be one of the most significant cultural buildings in Austria and was preselected for the European Heritage Label.

The Triumphal Arch was built in 1765 for the wedding of Maria Theresa's son.

The Museum Kitzbühel was opened in 1934. Its collections focus on the history of the town and the region of Kitzbühel and on the art of Alfons Walde.

The Parish Church of St Johann is considered to be one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Tyrol.

The Church of Saint Carl in Volders is considered to be one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in Tyrol.

My Trip to Salzburg

In my summer holidays I spent a week in Austria and also made a day trip to Salzburg.

The Hohensalzburg Castle is a famous landmark of Salzburg and one of the largest castles in Europe. Construction began in the 11th century at the behest of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Today it is one of the most visited sights in Austria and houses three museums.

On the card I put two Salzburg-themed stamps and got it cancelled at the philatelic shop in Salzburg.

At the castle I also bought two postcards showing the Golden Chamber and the courtyard.

Since 1924 the Hohensalzburg Castle is home to the Rainer Regiment Museum, which preserves the memory of Salzburg’s home regiment.

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre was opened in 1913. It is especially known for its performances of Mozart's operas.

The Panorama Museum shows the magnificent panorama painting of Johann Michael Sattler, which depicts the city of Salzburg in 1825. It was opened in 2005.

The Saint Sebastian's Church is a Baroque church. Its cemetery is the last resting place of Paracelsus and the father and the wife of Mozart.

The Salzburg Residenz was the residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Today it houses a museum.

Hellbrunn Palace was built between 1613 and 1619. It was used as a day residence in summer by the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg and is especially known for its trick-fountains.

The Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Sisi.

My Trip to Ingolstadt

On my way back home from my summer holidays I also spent a day in Ingolstadt.

Ingolstadt is a big city in the German State of Bavaria and an important industrial location. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Germany, the fifth largest city in Bavaria and the second largest German city on the Danube.

The Bavarian Army Museum was founded in 1879 in Munich and since 1972 it is housed in the New Castle of Ingolstadt. It has a large collection of military artifacts with a focus on the Bavarian Army. Currently the permanent exhibition at the New Castle is under construction, but a special exhibition can be visited.

The Reduit Tilly is a part of the Bavarian State Fortress of Ingolstadt. Today it houses one of the largest World War I museums in Europe and is a branch of the Bavarian Army Museum.

The Bavarian Police Museum is another branch of the Bavarian Army Museum. It was opened in 2011.

The Old Anatomy Building was constructed between 1723 and 1736 for the University of Ingolstadt. Today it houses the German Museum of Medical History. It is known as one of the settings in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

The Kreuztor is one of the most famous sights of Ingolstadt. It was constructed in 1385 as gateway to Ingolstadt's medieval city centre.

The Church of Our Lady is a Gothic hall church. Its construction started in 1425.

Japan: Kagoshima City Museum of Art

On 2nd August I got a postcard from Japan.

It shows the Kagoshima City Museum of Art. The Kagoshima City Museum of Art was opened in 1954 and moved to its current location in 1985. It is specialised in modern art and shows artworks by local artists and Western painters.

Malaysia: Selangor Forest Park

After nearly three years my collection of VMY 2014 cards is finally complete. Thanks to everyone who helped me!

On 31st July I got three postcards from Malaysia. 

One of them shows the Selangor Forest Park of the Forest Research Institute Malaysia. The Forest Research Institute Malaysia promotes sustainable management and optimal use of forest resources. The Selangor Forest Park is a man-made tropical rain forest planted and maintained by the institute since the 1920s. It proved that tropical rain forest can be re-created on devastated land and is the World’s oldest and largest re-created tropical rain forest. The Selangor Forest Park seeks for the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

EDIT: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025.
