Switzerland: Pig

On Friday I got two postcards: one from Switzerland and one from France.

The card from Switzerland shows an illustration of a pig.

France: Abbeville

On Friday I got two postcards: one from France and one from Switzerland.

The card from France shows various views of Abbeville. Abbeville is a commune on the River Somme in the Somme department.

cover from Canada

On Friday I got not only two postcards but also two covers including one from Canada.

Stamps:

Canada Day - Fortifications (eight from set of ten) (issued 30-06-1983)


Inside were postcards from five different museums in Canada and England.

The first card shows the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. The Canadian Museum of History, or Musée canadien de l’histoire in French, is Canada's national museum of human history. Founded in 1856, it is one of North America's oldest cultural institutions. Today it is the most visited museum in Canada and a major research institution.


The second card shows the Haida Heritage Centre in British Columbia. The Haida Heritage Centre is a cultural centre and museum of the Haida people. It was opened in 2008.


The third card shows a clock display at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa. The Canada Science and Technology Museum was founded in 1967 as Centennial project and focuses on the technological and scientific history of Canada. Between 2014 and 2017 the museum was closed for renovations.


The fourth card shows the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Nova Scotia's capital Halifax. The Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History was founded in 1868 and includes collections and exhibits concerning the natural sciences as well as artifacts of cultural significance to Nova Scotia. It is one of the 27 museums managed together as Nova Scotia Museum.


The last card is from the Hastings Fishermen's Museum. The Hastings Fishermen's Museum is a museum dedicated to the fishing industry and maritime history of Hastings, a seaside town in England. It is housed in the former St Nicholas' Church and was opened in 1956.

Germany: Lower Saxony State Museum

On Friday I have been to Hanover to visit the Lower Saxony State Museum.

The Lower Saxony State Museum was founded in 1856. First known as Museum of Art and Science and later called Museum of the Province of Hanover, it got its current name in 1950. Its collections focus on archaeology, art, coins, ethnology and natural history.

Actually I went to the museum to see the new big special exhibition Saxones, but unfortunately they did not have cards for the exhibition. Luckily I was still able to get some new postcards showing paintings by Caspar David Friedrich from the museum's collection.



German Bauhaus Stamps and Postcards

In early April the German Post issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of the Bauhaus (issued 04-04-2019). Luckily I still had a Bauhaus postcard, which I bought at the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin in 2017 and which I now used to get a special postmark. Apart from the new stamp I also used an older Bauhaus stamp (issued 01-07-2013). If you want to know more about the Bauhaus check out my history blog!



For the stamp the German Post also issued a set of four postcards. Two of them I used to get two other postmarks.



German Emoji Stamp and Cards

In early April the German Post issued an Emoji stamp (issued 04-04-2019) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web. Together with the stamp also a set of two cards was issued, which I used to get special postmarks.

United Kingdom: Bristol

On Thursday I got a postcard from the United Kingdom.

It shows various views of Bristol. Bristol is the fourth-largest city in England and the sixth-largest in the United Kingdom. It was once a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World.

Taiwan: Lanyang Museum

On Wednesday I got a postcard from Taiwan.

It shows the Lanyang Museum. The Lanyang Museum is a museum about the Yilan County. It was opened in 2010.


On the backside a ticket of the museum was affixed.

Germany: Missile Station Hombroich

On Tuesday I got a postcard from Germany.

It shows the Sculpture Hall at the Missile Station Hombroich. The Missile Station Hombroich was used by the NATO between 1967 and 1990. Beginning in 1994 the former military area became a place for culture, science and nature.

Austria: Maximilian I

On Wednesday I got two cards from Austria.

One of them shows Maximilian I. Maximilian I was Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death in 1519. He expanded the influence of the House of Habsburg through war and his marriage to Mary of Burgundy and thus laid the groundwork for the later global empire of his grandson Charles V.

Austria: Südbahnmuseum Mürzzuschlag

On Wednesday I got two cards from Austria.

One of them shows the Südbahnmuseum Mürzzuschlag in the Austrian State of Styria. The Südbahnmuseum Mürzzuschlag is a museum about the construction of the Southern Railway and was opened in 2007. It shows various locomotives as loans from the Austrian Federal Railways and the Vienna Technical Museum.

Austria: Wild Boar

On Monday I got a card from Austria.

It shows young Wild Boars. The Wild Boar is a suid, which was actually native to Eurasia. The human also introduced it to North America and Australia making it today one of the widest-ranging mammals in the World. It the ancestor of the most domestic pig breeds and was used as big-game animal for millennia.
