Croatia: Vukovar

The last week I was in Austria and during that time arrived eleven postcards including one from Croatia.

It shows various views of Vukovar. Vukovar is a city in eastern Croatia near the border with Serbia. It was hard-fought during the Croatian War of Independence. Today it is Croatia's biggest river port.

Stamp:
Centenary of World War I (issued 14-10-2014)
During World War I was Croatia a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but battles were only fought in the eastern part of the country. After World War I became Croatia a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the later Yugoslavia. Memorials to the fallen were neglected by the new rulers, because the most Croatian soldiers fought alongside the Austro-Hungarian Empire against Russians and Serbs.

Thank You very much Antonella!
