Germany: History of Erbach

Yesterday I got a postcard from Germany.

It is the Chronicle card of Erbach. Erbach is a town in the German State of Hesse. Erbach was first mentioned in 1095 and in 1321 it got the town privileges. In 1783 the ivory carving was introduced to Erbach. In the following time the town became known as the German Ivory Town and was considered to be one of the most important centres of ivory carving in Europe. After the trade of elephant tusks was prohibited in 1989, the workshops started to use fossil ivory and other materials.
